To have rescued this rabbit?

Driving home at 23:45 (NZ timezone) and I had to swerve as I'm approaching my driveway to miss a rabbit in the road. (I know it's late, I'm on call and there was an emergency CS).

I pulled over, rabbit seemed very well fed / good condition and has a collar around it's neck but no contact details. So I brought it home and have stuck it in a spare chicken coop for overnight (with water, carrot & lots of grass).

DH is tolerantly amused but says he would have left the rabbit where it was. It nearly got squashed twice while I was looking around (and trying to see if any houses had lights on or concerned owners bunny-hunting).

Would anyone else have left it there?

probably would have left it, my dogs wouldnt have been too chuffed

VeggieReggie · 08/02/2011 11:32

It will need to eat hay. Not too much carrot.

Put up a poster, and mayb you will get a huge reward, then your DH will have to eat his words!

solo · 08/02/2011 11:34

I'd have rescued it too. Well done OP.

LadyThumb · 08/02/2011 11:34

No, I most certainly wouldn't have left it there - it wouldn't have survived for long.

theoriginalscrummymummy · 08/02/2011 11:35

YANBU, I would have picked it up. Call the local vets and let them know you've found it. Rabbits have vaccinations, so the rabbits owner might call them.

KurriKurri · 08/02/2011 11:38

I'd have brought it home - it's obviously a very pampered pet if it's wearing a collar - so someone will be missing it.

Mind you I am the woman who insisted DH turned the car and drove back about five miles because I'd seen an injured cow lying down at the side of the road. It turned out to be an old sofa. Blush

TechnoKitten · 08/02/2011 11:39

I think I may know who it belongs to - one of the house surgeons was talking about his pet rabbits a day or few ago and he lives a few doors down from me. I did try his pager but it was switched off (fair nuff as he's not working).

Didn't think of the vet idea, was going to try housebod and SPCA tomorrow.

LOL! KurriKurri! that's made me chuckle! I once went back up the motorway and down again because I was sure I saw a dog by the central reservation...nothing there though, but I tried :)

What's a house surgeon?

Thank God there are kind people who will do what you have done. Years ago I rescued a rabbit who had been dumped on a wild with some wild rabbits. I actually knew who the owner was - a vile woman - so I took him home and he became a beloved pet.

Poor thing doesn't deserve to end up dead. Well done again and hopefully you can reunite it with its owners....

Let us know!

House surgeon - junior doc in first 1-2 years of training.

I'd have stopped and got it too
Sounds like a pet
I've never seen a wild rabbit with a collar Grin

it may be microchipped our house rabbit aka psychobunny has a chip ( as does the cat but not the rats )

BitOfFun · 08/02/2011 11:56

I rescued one from under a car on our street a few weeks ago. It went to the animal shelter in the end, as nobody claimed him despite my posters on lamp-posts. I think that people just dump them smetimes- they are pretty dull pets.

HellonHeels · 08/02/2011 12:05

Poor bunny - thank you for rescuing him. You did the right thing.

Jude89 · 08/02/2011 12:18

We found a baby rabbit in a churchyard, we took it home and it lived with our rabbit for a few weeks while we put up posters and made announcements in church etc, after that we gave it away to a family who would really appreciate him.

deepheat · 08/02/2011 12:23

YABU. It might just have been on holiday. Maybe even its Bunnymoon!

I'm sorry.

Fetlock · 08/02/2011 12:26

glad you rescued it, i would have done so too, i love rabbits!

KaraStarbuckThrace · 08/02/2011 12:28

I would take it to the vet and get it scanned as it may be microshipped.

Well done for stopping!
Had to laugh @ KurriKurri attempting to rescue a sofa!! Was it a very nice sofa?

onehotmomma · 08/02/2011 12:31

I would have rescued it too Grin

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 08/02/2011 12:32

Sunday lunch

Sorry Blush Grin

As BoF says, rabbits are very boring. Although I accept they can be quite pretty.

YANBU though op. I think I'd have done the same.

I would have brought it home. The Devil Dog would have had to go on an overnight playdate though as he would be thinking "Om nom nom nom" and Whippet dog would have been horrified Hmm

LadyBunny · 08/02/2011 14:43

I'd have rescued it. If it has a collar it is obviously much loved and allowed to roam. If you're lucky, the caring owner may have had it chipped, which should make identifying the owner a breeeze. Check with the vet.

Cauliflower leaves are a big favourite, but don't give it lettuce or cabbage. There's too much water for rabbits' digestive systems and they get the bunnytrots.

(and I should know these things!!! Grin )

GrimmaTheNome · 08/02/2011 14:48

Take it to the vet, they can check for a chip even if they don't recognise it.

A House Surgeon does sound a bit like the interior version of a tree surgeon
