£78 for checkup and scale & polish. Was I unreasonable to tell receptionist this was exhorbitant?

BakewellTarts · 07/02/2011 21:46

! I get mine for £38.

Changing2011 · 07/02/2011 21:46

Mine is £16!!

bubblewrapped · 07/02/2011 21:46

I doubt the receptionist has any say in the price lists.

gaelicsheep · 07/02/2011 21:52

Check up is £30. Scale and polish additional £48 - that's what shocked me. I asked for dentist to do it during rather than having to have a separate hygienist's appt. Didn't expect to be charged the same as two separate appts. That's me done with blardy private dentists.

I know it's not the receptionist's fault. I was in tears Blush(shattered and hormonal).

Crikey, mine is about £20 ish - NHS dentist.

Carrotsandcelery · 07/02/2011 21:56

Would the property the dentist works in be very expensive? That is the only excuse I could think of for such a price.

Carrotsandcelery · 07/02/2011 21:56

BTW they should have told you when you booked that you would be charged twice so it might be the receptionist's fault.

gaelicsheep · 07/02/2011 22:08

No, this is not a Harley Street type dentist. I'm in Northern Scotland.

I feel very silly now, and yet still somewhat justified in being very peed off. I think I might need to apologise to them for my behaviour though Blush.

There's a 2 year waiting list here for an NHS dentist. If I had one I'd have got this treatment free as I have an 8 month old - that grates even more. I think I'll be joining the waiting list.

I am in the North East of Scotland gaelic and my check up is about £35.
I would still maintain that they should have warned you about the extra cost.
You cannot get an NHS dentist near me either.

offschoolagain · 07/02/2011 22:18

I kid you not: I had root canal filling in one tooth today, I do not live in an expensive part of the country: £550. O M G>

FabbyChic · 07/02/2011 22:19

I get free dental treatment and a scale and polish will still cost me £45 it is not free even if you have an NHS dentist.

Carrotsandcelery · 07/02/2011 22:19

My dh had a crown done in Aberdeen recently and it cost us over £400. Shock

emsyj · 07/02/2011 22:21

That doesn't sound an outrageous amount fr private treatment to me tbh.

emsyj · 07/02/2011 22:23

I used to pay £70 for a hygiene visit but that was in central London and was a full 45 min appt and the hygienist was EXCELLENT and worth every penny. I pay £40 now for much less thorough treatment in the north west. A check up here is £70 tho.

fifitrixibell · 07/02/2011 22:25

I Just paid £46 for check up, scale and polish, X rays and replacement filling. That's NHS though.

gaelicsheep · 07/02/2011 22:27

FabbyChic - is that really true? Even if you have an exemption card?

Oh I feel sooo bad. DH was furious with me for embarrassing him. I feel like such a head case. Sad

I am a private patient at a dentist in central London and I only pay £40ish for that. Maybe £50. But as soon as I told them I was PG they took me on as an NHS patient for the duration of my maternity exemption, which I wasn't expecting! I have been on their NHS waiting list for about three years so hopefully I'll get to the top one day...

Carrotsandcelery · 07/02/2011 22:30

Don't worry about it gaelic - he will know not to mess with you anywhere public to spare his Blush - you could use this to your advantage Grin

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 07/02/2011 22:31

In wales, dentistry is free while your DC is under one, is that not true in scotland?
I guess that only applies to NHS though, but is there any way to claim any back?

PS, I had a filling for £35 on the NHS. DP went to same dentist and have a tooth out privately for £45. I would guess the difference shouldnt be so much for you either?

gordyslovesheep · 07/02/2011 22:38

£16 every 6mths - check up scale and polish

gordyslovesheep · 07/02/2011 22:39

oh and has never had a filling in an adult tooth - is 41 this year Grin

SuchProspects · 07/02/2011 23:13

YABU but I am sorry you got such a shock. It should have been pointed out to you when you made your appointment how much it would cost.

If you asked the dentist to clean your teeth for you instead of seeing a hygienist to do that I'm not surprised you were charged a lot. A dentist is so much more highly qualified than a hygienist - it's not reasonable to expect them to spend their time cleaning your teeth and not charge you at the rate they would otherwise be earning. Ironically a hygienist would probably have done a better job of the cleaning.

gaelicsheep · 07/02/2011 23:21

The hygienist would only have been £5 cheaper apparently. I really really didn't want to go twice. Plus I naively thought that since I was already paying for a 20 min check up there would be some kind of intermediary arrangement whereby I wasn't paying twice for the same time IYSWIM.

In my work if it takes me 2 minutes to quickly check something and all is OK I generally waive the charge. This is why I would never make a business woman.

I dont pay for check ups (NHS dentist), hygienist costs £29 per visit.
My dentist is NHS predominately but does do "private" stuff e.g white fillings, tooth whitening etc. Used to pay for check ups but now he doesn't charge-not sure why..
