We finally got round to sorting out garden on Saturday. DP got jagged on the ankle by a jaggy plant. Lots of blood, but stopped bleeding pretty quickly. He's been in pain ever since and his ankle has swollen quite a bit. He having difficulty walking on it and can't drive on it. I've told him to go to Drs or A&E tomorrow - but like a lot of men he's very reluctant!

So AIBU? Or should be be trying to get some help now??

If he's still refusing to go, you could try kicking him on the affected ankle repeatedly? For his own good, obviously.

Northernlurker · 07/02/2011 23:40

Yes kick him on the ankle whilst telling him you'll leave him.

I hope he does go because you really can't bugger about with this. Infection can move horribly fast even in healthy, strong individuals.

Have they rung back?

Could you let us know what happened?

Did NHS Direct get back to you? Has he yet been seen? Hope it is under control now!

Sorry to take so long to get back to you! They finally phoned back just as we were going to bed - advised he go to the out-of-hours centre. Got granny out of her bed, luckily she lives 5 mins away. Saw oohs nurse who said it wasn't infected, and looked like he'd gone over on it (which he hadn't) She couldn't understand why it is so swollen and sore. Gave him antibiotics just in case and advised him to see his doctor today. He's still hobbling about this morning - so I'll make him get an appointment before we leave for work (he's still intending to go in..) Thanks for the help last night - he wouldn't hav gone in if I hadn't mentioned the whole "losing your leg and maybe dying" thing.

It's swollen and sore because it's infected! Did she not see the wound? Glad he's got some abs and going to the doctor but am thoroughly puzzled by that nurse. She shouldn't be arranging for antibiotics if she thinks theres no infection!

RunAwayWife · 08/02/2011 08:03

He needs to get it looked at and get a tetanus jab if he is not up to date with his already

ginmakesitallok · 08/02/2011 08:06

She did see the wound and said that it was infected - not hot too touch. The antibiotics are "just in case" - she thought that maybe a bit of plant was still in his ankle - but couldn't refer for an x-ray. He's got an appointment with Dr for 5.20 this pm

What antibiotics have you got ?

Seems like nurse was sitting on the fence/hasn't got a clue.
Was she saying the wound was infected but the ankle swelling was not due to infection ?

Hope it all works out.

I'd still sit it out at A&E!

Mumsnet 1 Out-of-hours nurse 0

Doctor this pm says definitely an infection so has given more antibiotics (doxy) on top of last nights flucloxacillin, signed him off work for a week (which will kill him) and arranged another appointment for Friday

Hurrah for mumsnet! No idea what nursie was thinking....Grin

Hope dp is fully fixed soon - and has acknowledged you were right? Grin

ginmakesitallok · 08/02/2011 20:05

as if northern! Rather than "thanks for making me go to the dr", I'm getting "and you laughed at me, and now I've got to go back to the Drs on Friday". Anyway - not going to point score over this one - just hope he gets better soon
