P&R homework. (Yr 10) guaging opinions on terminations.

I do not want her researching such an emotive/dvisive subject on the internet so where is she supposed to get balanced information from?
AIBU to ban her from googling?

Sit with her while she does it?

ThePosieParker · 07/02/2011 18:06

Erm, I think she's old enough for the whole debate tbh. But I would either a) sit with her or b) recommend insist on certain sites.

I would imagine part of the homework is the propaganda?

GypsyMoth · 07/02/2011 18:08

Dd has done this for homework. She looked on google images too, which is extremely graffic!

AtYourCervix · 07/02/2011 18:08

which sites though? - seem to be either completely pro-choice or pro-life. i want balance.

readywithwellies · 07/02/2011 18:08

She is old enough to google this. Kids her age are having terminations.

LaWeaselMys · 07/02/2011 18:09

Part of the lesson is probably how divisive it is.

curlymama · 07/02/2011 18:09

She's in Yr10, she's old enough to know the truth about it all. There are Yr10's out there that have had babies and abortions.

What is it that you are worried about her finding?

You could sit with her to do it so that you can be there to explain anything she finds shocking or upsetting.

mutznutz · 07/02/2011 18:10

Bloody hell, Year 10 and you don't want her Googling it?

I bet your hair would curl if you saw half of what she's probably already googled!

tabulahrasa · 07/02/2011 18:10

"which sites though? - seem to be either completely pro-choice or pro-life. i want balance."

doesn't letting her see both give balance though?

AtYourCervix · 07/02/2011 18:12

not got a problem with her knowing but would rather she learnt from a balnced source - not one quoting Dr seus with bits of fetuses designe to shock or from somewhere so pro-choice it doesn't debate at all.

www.abortionfacts.com/abortion/q_facts.asp

gives facts, no opinions if you click on left side of home page 'I'm not sure'

Nothing too graphic from what I could see.

Wook · 07/02/2011 18:14

There are graphic, extreme and shocking images and opinions on the Internet... and abortion is a divisive and emotive issue. Finding out about such things and being able to negotiate your way through this kind of minefield is surely what education about the world is?

for her coursework she will have to examine diverse points of view and be able to explain their reasons.

lessnarkypuffin · 07/02/2011 18:15

What is she supposed to be doing? If she's supposed to be guaging opinions then maybe she should be looking at the less balanced sites.

SPUC and Marie Stopes should cover both sides- SPUC anti, Marie Stopes pro-choice. SPUC may well have unpleasant and emotive pictures, but is likely to be less extreme than some American sites.

Wook · 07/02/2011 18:16

AtYourCervix can't dd make her own judgement after reading both sides? This isn't really an issue where either side has the monopoly on what's right or wrong is it ? (saying that as a pro choicer)

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 07/02/2011 18:17

how old is year 10?

AtYourCervix · 07/02/2011 18:18

maybe i am U. and should just let her get on with it then. it's trying to get a 14 yr old to do the examining and dispassionately explaining without getting sucked into te propaganda bit.

OP posts:
TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 07/02/2011 18:21

so shes 14?

well goodness, she is fine to google and see all sorts on the net

she should already know that the web doesn't tell only the whole truth

and she needs to be able to find the real stuff amongst it all

lessnarkypuffin · 07/02/2011 18:22

14/15

ThePosieParker · 07/02/2011 18:38

AYC....Pour a large glass of something and step away!!

trixie123 · 07/02/2011 18:40

If you really don't want her researching on the net, why not get her to spend an hour in her school library using the books in the appropriate section (RS, ethics, PSE) that will have been selected for their age appropriateness and as they are textbooks will have a variety of views quoted in an acceptable way. As an RS teacher I often encounter the problem that issues like this, capital punishment, euthanasia etc do send students to some questionable sites and they don't have the judgement to sort out what is useful and what is emotive nutjob stuff. They are usually very resistant to the idea of using the library because they think its quicker to google stuff but if she is trying to complete a specific task she might find it quicker.

AtYourCervix · 07/02/2011 18:47
