to be rather tempted to send DS to school in his uniform on World Book day and say he is Just William on his way to school??

Now, I love books and trying to pass a love of reading onto DS and we do a bedtime story every night

However, I don't quite get what dressing up on World Book Day will achieve, other than extra stress/cost for parents!

He's 4.5yrs old...his favourite character atm is Spiderman, which although we have a costume for, is from a comic not a book...

I could send him as Harry Potter as there always seems to be HP costumes around...but he's too young for the books..

Do it Smile

AGree, World Book Day does my head in

Gleekfreak · 06/02/2011 20:50

Did this at my DC school-they absolutely LOVED it! Gave them lots of pleasure and encouragement. Teachers got into it too,so much fun had by all! So yes, think you are BU Wink

Northernlurker · 06/02/2011 20:50

YOu need to give him a catapault and a cap to pull that off. Also draw freckles on him unless he is gifted them by nature.

strandednomore · 06/02/2011 20:52

Gawd when is World Book Day? Dd2 will definitely want to be Cinderella or Belle, will that do?

muggglewump · 06/02/2011 20:53

Shitting hell, when is it?

I hate dressing up days, just more stress and cash for parents.

notnowbernard · 06/02/2011 20:54

The dressing-up is endless though!

Last year alone we had: World Book Day, Victorian DAy, Great Fire of LOndon Day, 'Under The Sea' dress-up Day, 'Back-to-Front' Day (for charity)

I've not that much imagination, frankly

Northernlurker · 06/02/2011 20:55

Beginning of March.

I wonder what dd2 wants to be?

One year we made a cardboard whale sandwich board type thing and sent dd1 as the whale from the snail and the whale with her hair pulled up on the top of her head with blue streamers in it - for the whale's waterspout. I was damn proud of that even if dh drew the whale.

I hate World Book day - nightmare!

valiumredhead · 06/02/2011 20:56

We've done Just William for book day! One sock up other one down, shorts, dirty knees, cap, and undone tie Grin

Tryharder · 06/02/2011 20:59

I am going to copy Northernlurker's idea and pass it off as my own....Grin

strandednomore · 06/02/2011 21:03

Thing is it's meant to be the dc's favourite character isn't it? In which case dd1 will probably be going as a skeleton as her favourite book at the moment seems to be her Usbourne lift the flap Inside your Body book...

Northernlurker · 06/02/2011 21:04

stranded - GAP sometimes have skelton pjs which would be very easy for that. Worth a look on Ebay if she's 5 or 6.

PussinJimmyChoos · 06/02/2011 21:05

Hmmm so I could get away with Spiderman then??? Grin

And if teacher gets pissy and says Spiderman is a cartoon not a book, I shall say well Mumsnet made me do it! Wink

I like the spirit of it all, but its the faff for the parents along with all the other endless crap stuff they ask us to do!

In my day it was just paint an Easter egg and that was it..and I turned out lovely Grin

northernlurker - thanks, she is 5. No mention of it from her school though so not sure if they are doing it or not. We have a sponsored gallop to co-incide with Gold Cup day (guess where I live!), for which they have to wear a dressed up hat. So I don't know if they are doing Book Day as well? BUt if so I will have a look for those pj's!

WimpleOfTheBallet · 06/02/2011 21:08

I LOVE World Book Day and so does DD...we confer for ages on what she'll be. It's great! Dressing up...making stuff...what's not to love?

Pictish · 06/02/2011 21:09

I sent mine in a checked shirt and jean with a golden ticket. Charlie Bucket - voila. No need to thank me. Grin

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 06/02/2011 21:09

I once went as Minnie the Minx and she's from a comic so I don't see the problem with Spiderman...

saffy85 · 06/02/2011 21:14

YANBU

My DD is only 3 so still too young for this just yet but just out of interest would dressing he in jeans and a tee shirt and insisting she's Ramona Quimby be ok do you think? I loved those stories when I was little and am hoping DD does too Smile

Runoutofideas · 06/02/2011 21:16

Think yourselves lucky that you haven't got the "Come as an endangered animal day" which we have next week......

Northernlurker · 06/02/2011 21:18

runout - black and white clothes and face paint - panda?

PussinJimmyChoos · 06/02/2011 21:23

Part of me did think ooh would be good to send DS as really obscure character from vvv high brow book just to wind teachers up but then realised I don't know any high brow books

I would love to do this for our boys but the demographic of our school is such that there would be low participation and those who did would stand out like a sore thumb Sad. I think only half (if that) in ds2's class last year brought a favourite book to show - school try really hard but in a softly, softly way (which is very appropriate). So maybe dressing up isn't such a bad thing ...

roomforthree · 06/02/2011 21:28

We did Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs. Just normal clothes, and erm, a bucketful of dinosaurs.

Disclaimer: I usually go to great lengths to do home-made costumes, but unable to that time as very short notice.

pinkhebe · 06/02/2011 21:30

I did Horrid Henry one year Blush

MrsMellowDrummer · 06/02/2011 21:45

Stripy jumper and jeans - Where's Wally?

Normal clothes, plus saucepan with a couple of yucky things in it and wooden spoon - George's Marvellous Medicine

Normal (scruffy!) clothes, plus yellow ticket shaped bit of paper - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Easy peasy.
