AHHH!

I have a baby shower to attend in a week, they do not know the sex of the baby and i have just been trying to find a baby gift of a neutral colour! I know they exist, but do shops stock them! NO they have pink and blue of everything, no other option!

SO frustrating!

(and breathe! - rant over )

:)

YANBU -it drives me nutty that you have to get a blue or pink.

Newgolddream · 05/02/2011 16:14

What kind of gift are you looking for? If its clothes Ive seen lots on baby clothes in cream in the shops.

bubblewrapped · 05/02/2011 16:15

Most shops sell white.. you cant get more neutral than that! And there are loads of things in a nice pale biscuity colour too which is neutral.

BuzzLightBeer · 05/02/2011 16:16

Toys are blue and pink? Clothes? keepsakes?

Don't be silly. if you are only finding blue and pink you are in the wrong shops or have no imagination.

oggybags · 05/02/2011 16:18

GAP will be your friend!

WimpleOfTheBallet · 05/02/2011 16:23

Neutral toys

canyou · 05/02/2011 16:31

Calpol, ear plugs and adult paracetamol are my baby shower gifts, all very practical Wink
And then I buy an appropriate gift when the baby arrives.
Sorry I am of no help Blush

LauraSmurf · 05/02/2011 16:33

I had about 20 minutes today between other things to find a gift, so i went to John Lewis and 2 local gift shops.

I was looking for a taggie blanket or jelly bean comforter kinda thing. I know they exist in biscuity neutral colours, but none of these shops stocked them in anything but pink and blue!

I am so going to add ear plugs and calpol to whatever i get though! Great idea!

Nightmare. We didn't find out the sex, and the majority of clothe shops were all blue and pink. Baby Gap was fab-all yellow, white and green...saying that Mamas and Papas do a lovely range of gifts- baby books, silver rattles and a beautiful little silver scroll which holds the baby's birth certificate!

irishqueen · 05/02/2011 16:59

tk maax have big gift baskets in biscuit and cream with toy, vest, gro, mitts etc at £18

canyou · 05/02/2011 22:51

Glad I could help Grin A take away voucher is also usually appreciated.
I hate buying for an unborn baby for no other reason then the parents do not yet know what they need or would like.

aPixie · 05/02/2011 22:55

Boots clothes section has some fab unisex outfits. Not just pale creams or whites either, I'm talking really funky and bright.

(just bought ds2 a brigh orange soft cotton dungaree outfit and matching reversible jacket, I love it)

Do love the calpol idea though. Not too sure about earplugs, I like to know when my baby needs a feed or whatever. Confused

Grumpla · 05/02/2011 22:57

Debenhams have some cool bright stuff that is IMO fairly unisex!

spongebobsquareknickers · 05/02/2011 23:04

Add to calpol...
bonjela, infacol/gripe water, a syringe, a feverscan thermometer, sudocrem, vaseline

nipple cream if appropriate?

bath products?

spongebobsquareknickers · 05/02/2011 23:05

in fact, cousin in law is due next month, i think im gonna so exactly that! Grin

canyou · 05/02/2011 23:16

aPixie the ear plugs are for a joke, cheap and cheerful from Halfords I would be Shock and Sad if anyone actually used them while they had a DC in their care.
Spongebob, a babycare box is a good idea as it is probably not some thing people think to get.

MoaningMedalllist · 06/02/2011 10:57

Oh I know its ridicurrous,
yellow and white seem to be the only options, red can be too, I dress my son in red

Kryshees · 06/02/2011 11:02

I'm a wahm and MAKE lots of neutral things, but in brights. And I allowed to post my link? hmmm I will and someone can tell me off....

Happy to remove the link if anyone takes offence.

abenstille · 06/02/2011 11:31

I second 'canyou'
with bonjela, wetwipes/reusable wipes or flannels, cotton wool, sudocrem and bottles of water for mum. All of the above items are permanently out of reach when youre feeding or botty changing.
I thought two packs of wetwipes and a flannel would be ample when I was due...How wrong I was (had a reflux baby)!!

Underachieving · 06/02/2011 11:45

Best baby gift anyone ever gave me was a promise to deliver a weeks worth of chilled home-made adult food which just needed to be microwaved baby was born. They delivered on it (three trips) and I didn't have to cook or live off junk, I could spend all my time holding and getting to know my new little girl. They made thier own tea and did my washing up while they were there too. An angel!

I totally hear you about the pink/blue thing. I knew I was having a girl but I really don't like all this sugar pink stuff. With all the amazing colours in this world why should my child be swamped in just one just because they are (like another 50% of all humanity) one particular gender?

So YANBU

nannynobnobs · 06/02/2011 11:55

My DDs were never in froufrou pinks or 'biscuit'. Bright colours, stripes, patterns, and the ancient terry-towelling babygros I held on to because I couldn't find them stocked anywhere. I do like a terry babygro :)
I couldn't think of anything worse then the pastel flowery Pooh tat that most girls seem to end up in. I was bought a couple of these outfits by well meaning relatives, so we did the obligatory 'photo in lovely outfit' then passed them on to people who would appreciate them.

Underachieving · 06/02/2011 12:03

Here here nannynobnobs, mine wear colours too. Good for thier visual development I say!

I find Dylon machine dye and a bottle of table salt to be a colourful Mummy's best friend personally. Today DD2 age 14 weeks is resplendant in Dylon Amazon Green. I was given a minor mountain of flowery sugar pink hand-me-downs which are now cerise, orange, turquoise, green and Cadbury Purple. I love it!

Anyhow that was off topic, sorry.

YA still NBU OP Grin
