To think there's nothing 'only' about £100 odd quid

I'm fed up with kids coming home with notes from activities, that say:

come and do such and such it's only £100 odd and due in next two weeks.

I'm fed up with companies i.e. garage, saying it's only £100 odd to get it fixed, we'll go ahead and do it then - er no, but why it's only £100 to be done, yes but you are not the first nor last that wants £100 from me.

I'm fed up with friends saying come and do x i.e. hen do's, parties etc, it's only £100 odd - sorry can't make it, oh you are such a party pooper.

AIBU to think it's not only £100?!?!

They get this from the advertising of PC World and Currys and their ilk. You know their persuasive: "Only five-nine-nine" - wha-at?!

HecateQueenOfWitches · 05/02/2011 13:32

Yes. I think people who have a lot of money really do feel that it is 'only' a hundred pounds.

I had a time in my life when it was 'only' a hundred pounds. No big deal. Didn't seem like a lot of money.

And then I had a time in my life when I couldn't find a spare pound for a loaf of bread, and anyone saying 'only' a hundred pounds would have probably got my boot up their arse Grin

So I know that it really is 'only' a hundred pounds to some people and not everyone who feels that way truly understands what it's like when that hundred pounds is beyond you.

YANBU... Once you're getting into bank-notes as opposed to loose change I think 'only' isn't appropriate. A lot of people have to watch every penny and by downplaying the £100 requested with an 'only' the implication is that 'it's small change to me'...

The same people tend to say things like 'it's only money'...

Hopelesslydisorganised · 05/02/2011 17:16

YANBU there is nothing "only" about £100. Even on full-time hours when I earned a good salary £100 was a big sum.

Grumpla · 05/02/2011 19:18

YANBU.

I still price things in terms of hours on the minimum wage, it was a good habit to get into when I had my first job. I'm not earning min wage now, but work far fewer hours, so that would still be a lot of money for me. And even if I was a billionaire I think I'd still think of money in those terms, it's pretty ingrained now.

Also thanks to GCSE Economics I also think of 'opportunity cost' e.g. what else could I have for that £100. That was one of the few useful things I learnt at school I think!

oh well will have an extra 100+ this month as no council tax

woohooHmm

dementedma · 05/02/2011 19:29

my new glasses will cost £170 - so no new glasses for me Sad

U are completely NBU. Thinking £100 is "only" anything leads to all the unsustainable personal debt we have round our necks these days.
