DS1 who is 15 has intrumental lessons from a teacher organised by the head of music.I gave DS a cheque to pay for his lessons on Tuesday.
When i check my bank online yesterday I see the cheque has cleared but is for nearly twice as much!It transpires that the music teacher told DS to alter the amount on the cheque to include the bill for the following half term's fees as well.I had already emailed the music teacher querying this because it included some lessons where the teacher had been ill
DS1 is quite compliant and acted under duress, but I am totally shocked that a teacher would abuse his position of authority to pressure a minor to do something illegal like this.I don't know what to do next without implicating DS

I agree Adair - VERY serious misconduct. any problem with a cheque should be sent back with an explanation of changes needed - if any.

And if a TEACHER doesn't know how serious this is, I'd be seriously concerned tbh!

Fuck me!! Just read this out to OH (policeman) and his exact comment was 'fuck me' Shock. In his view , non official, your son was under duress etc etc. so wouldn't worry about him. He did bring up 2 other points (a) how old is the teacher? would he have actually realised how serious this is (i.e. is teach a very young teacher, not that that excuses it but maybe he doesn't realise himself how serious this is) my niece a very nice and serious girl is a teacher and would not have a clue how to write a cheque, never had to deal with them.. and (b) not so nice, but if teacher is a more mature person could he be influencing kids to do anything else?

Still curious as to why DS didn't mention this odd event on Tuesday.

cumfy · 09/02/2011 21:51

Anything happen ?

ImFab · 09/02/2011 21:56

Shock.

Figgyrolls · 09/02/2011 22:08

Horrifying, I think I might call the HT and then if they didn't do anything then I would report the fraud to the local police to see if they have had any other incidences of it. I wouldn't worry about your son, he is under 18 and the only thing he did wrong was listen to his teacher.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 09/02/2011 22:51

This is appalling, and I would stop the cheque as soon as the bank opens tomorrow, and contact the Headteacher.

One question - was the cheque made out to the school, the Local Authority or to the teacher himself? It doesn't make a difference to the gravity of what he's done - it just changes whether or not he benefits personally.

I am the treasurer of an art club - we pay a weekly class fee that hires the hall and pays for our art teacher. I get the odd cheque with a mistake on it, and the only option is to take it back to the person who wrote it, and ask them to change it and initial it - how can the teacher be stupid enough to think anything else??

Vicky2011 · 09/02/2011 23:04

Beyond Shock at this. Your poor DS

zipzap · 09/02/2011 23:30

Does your ds know if he has changed any more cheques or if any other students were made to change their cheques too?

might be that the teacher was hoping nobody would notice and then would be paid for next half term's lessons as well (despite having already had the money IYSWIM)

Have you checked to see if he (teacher) has changed any other cheques you paid to him or has the right amount always gone through?
