Badgers are vermin and shouldn't be so bloody be protected

Badgers are huge and ugly bastards. We've had one in our garden for the last two nights who killed our daddy-bunny and who has now breached our best enclosure to take our babies too. You should see these beasts. Size of a big dog and bloody frightening. I always thought Badgers would be cute and snuggly - NOT - they're ugly beasts who don't deserve the protection they get. They spread TB, they kill chickens, bunnies and all sorts of garden animals and all they seem to contribute is mass murder and digging great, big holes in your garden.

I loathe the creatures.

Blimey, I always knew dachshunds were brave little chaps, being bred to hunt badgers, but I didn't know badgers could be big dog sized.

(I've only seen one live once - sunning itself at Caerlaverlock RSPB. I'd estimate it as about as long as a dachshund but wider.)

So more like a small stout dog?

PaisleyLeaf · 03/02/2011 22:33

Extreme measures? You can either provide a suitable home for a pet.....or not.

SoupDragon · 03/02/2011 22:34

"how on earth could they be vermin"

Well, in my parents case the damn things were tunnelling so extensively that the garden was sinking and the tunnels were heading towards the house.

HarrietSchulenberg · 03/02/2011 22:35

Of course they kill things - what did you think they did for dinner, grew their own veg? Rabbits, especially caged ones, are pretty much like a takeaway for them, and for foxes.

They're smelly bastards too.

bibbitybobbityhat · 03/02/2011 22:38

They aren't vermin. They are wild animals. They don't know your rabbits are pets. You silly person.

hellymelly · 03/02/2011 22:39

they do look nice in their little velveteen jackets though, wearing monacles and chatting to their little mole friends. (badger lover emoticon needed here, maybe Grin? as they are "bitey fuckers"?

AgentZigzag · 03/02/2011 22:42

I really agree with you post bibbity, the OP is just a big silly billy Grin

Vagabond · 03/02/2011 22:42

Thanks for all your posts.

Badgers still suck. But thanks for your opinions - even the lefties!

I promise not to do nothing more than hiss with intent,

Thanks Bippity, I must be as silly as your name!

That is very very sweet. And much smaller than a rottweiler, definitely.

hellymelly · 03/02/2011 22:50

Or are those the hands of a GIANT!!!??? AARRGGHH

LadyOfTheManor · 03/02/2011 22:51

Hmm there are many on our countries roads. They don't bother me unless
a) I hit one (they ruin your car)
b) They mate. Sounds like several women screaming. Off with their heads.

I have more of a problem with foxes as we keep chickens.

KurriKurri · 03/02/2011 22:54

Vagabond's badger

GrimmaTheNome · 03/02/2011 22:56

That could give my dachshund nightmares Grin

pointylug · 03/02/2011 22:58

I admire the Badger.

Vagabond · 03/02/2011 23:01

What to say.... they are pests to some, nobel to others.

We shall never agree.

I just wish the fuckers would stay away from our garden and killing our bunnies. Oy Vei!

OP posts:
TabithaSilver · 03/02/2011 23:03

Is it proven they spread TB? I thought this was still under debate?

Vagabond · 03/02/2011 23:15

They killed 50 Alpacas at a farm in Devon last month by spreading TB.

OP posts:
BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 23:18

Many humans carry TB Confused - it's an increasingly issue in some parts of the country - should we stop protecting adults and anyone that may be at risk of carrying TB.........well - you know ;-)

Vagabond · 03/02/2011 23:23

As long as the human TB carriers don't dig in my garden, I really have no problem with them.. Frankly, I would prefer it because they are not protected and I could successfully eradicate them from my garden. Grin

OP posts:
BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 23:24

no - but you could end up sitting next to them.........

Vagabond · 03/02/2011 23:29

Well, that's a whole other thread.... there is a rat within 30ft from you right now but it's probably best not to think of that now.

With that cheerful thought, I'll go back to my badger baiting and our giant flashlight tonight.

OP posts:
Jellykat · 03/02/2011 23:44

Tabitha- in order for a badger to spread TB, cattle etc and badgers would have to go nose to nose, as the bacteria are in the mucus membranes... There is more live bacteria in slurry from infected cattle, which remains live in the earth for months..

Vagabond- you absolutely cannot say it was the badgers that killed the Alpacas! Rats carry TB too, and all it would take would be 1 new infected Alpaca introduced into the herd, and that's it, or a vet carrying the bacteria on their boots from an infected cattle farm..

The badger is a scapegoat, there are many scientists, wildlife experts like David Attenborough, and even celebrities like Brian May,and Joanna Lumley who are fighting for the continuation of the badgers protection, because they all know the facts!!

ruddybindippers · 03/02/2011 23:49

Badgers are great, we have 4 or 5 in the garden most nights. They eat all of the food waste too.
