For a small punnet of grapes? You know the half size boxes!

Usually buy fruit from co-op (no greengrocers around here) and it's usually 2 for £4 or £2.50 each. Haven't had grapes for a while and after that other thread really fancied some.

But yeah, £4. AIBU to be outraged.

(I know it's a petty thing to worry about but I just can't believe it)

Sorry - wee bit ranty there. Meal planning and the bank are not working well together today!

nomoreheels- fab site! Thank you for that. We get a veg box so tend to have seasonal vegetables but gave up the fruit box due to excessive pears, so it's good to know what fruit are technically in season (I say technically because we hardly grow any in this country except for soft fruit, do we?).

I haven't bought proper potatoes for about a fortnight. I keep getting ready prepped peeled, sliced, mashed etc. It works out a lot cheaper than those that are in skins.
I am not sure why, the last time I got a bag of spuds, half of them were rotten.

I'm going with YABU - but it's pure sour grapes on my part because I live in Australia and most of our fruit and veg prices are set to go through the roof thanks to the annihilation of crops in Queensland over the last few weeks.

We can apparently look forward to paying up to $18/kilo for bananas (about £12/kilo) as entire fields of the Queensland crop was destroyed by cyclone Yasi yesterday.

But in reality, no YANBthatU - it is a steep price to pay.

You're all welcome for the link. Smile

I'd second that fruit/veg stalls are often a much cheaper option, and the quality can be pretty good too.

Now that I'm pretty much off on ML I'm thinking about getting a Riverford Organics fruit/veg box delivery. I didn't go for it previously as they would have had to leave it at the front of our house while we were at work.

I tried some of their produce at an event last September and it was incredible - so, so much better than supermarket stuff. They have to get a lot of their fruit from other countries, but do limit it to France etc as much as possible.

Unfortunately winter fruit selections in these kinds of boxes tend to be kiwis, blood oranges and bananas but that's just the way it is until the nicer weather starts!

We have a greengrocer within an easy walk that I just wish was better. I would gladly spend good money in there, but their stuff is always on the turn and not cheap either.

((sigh)) I dream of a fruit and veg stall!!! To shop at, not to run obviously.

Spent £7 at market on saturday. Got 3lb of bananas, 3lb of satsumas, 1lb of cherries, 1lb of lychees, a water melon and some onions.

I think people who have access to a market, but buy in supermarkets, are crazy. Its so much cheaper.

Woodlands · 03/02/2011 13:46

we have a good market but it's all £1 a bowl. so last week i got a huge bowlful ofrunner beans but we haven't been able to eat them all before they've gone off. you can only get one or two types of fruit and veg as otherwise there is too much wastage. i need to join forces with friends i think, and buy say 8 different things and split each one 3 ways!

figcake · 03/02/2011 14:47

I think people get hung up on this fresh fruit business and can end up eating barely any. I like to supplement fresh with tinned and dried fruit and even frozen (berries) and DCs do not complain

EricNorthmansMistress · 03/02/2011 15:06

I buy my fruit and veg in Aldi, they state that they try to source locally in order to keep costs down, and I buy whatever is on offer. This week it's these

It's a bit barking to expect out of season fruit flown in from Israel or Kenya to be affordable. It's a luxury.

firstforthought · 03/02/2011 15:09

YANBU

prettymuchapixiegirl · 03/02/2011 15:38

Get yourself down to Aldi! Seedless grapes are £1.49 for a pack in there, compared to about £3 for the same sized pack in Tesco

Seriously, what do you expect?

If you are buying fruit that won't ever grow here, and is out of season in most of the Northern hemisphere, it's going to be expensive, yes?

Rasberries are expensive because they are a temperate fruit with a very short season, and they are VERY fragile, and do not keep well.

Strawberries - ditto, although not quite to the same extent.

It's February, people!!! Buy apples, pears, manderins. Don't bother with summer fruits when it isn't summer. It's entirely reasonable for the price to be high and the quality crap.
