To think my work collegue should have stayed at home this week?

VinegarTits · 03/02/2011 11:41

She has coughed and sneezed her germs all over the office all week! and now i am getting her lurgy

IMO she should have stayed at home, she lives 2 mins away from the office, and works part time, and has come in and sneezed and coughed everywhere

i commute 1 hr and 10 mins to get here and work fulltime, i certainly wont be up to driving that distance with a fucking virus

And yes i know you can catch cold germs from anywhere, but i think it is selfish that she has still come to work when there is a very high risk she will infect anyone within a 10 meter raduis (i sit next to her)

Would she get paid if she was off sick?

VinegarTits · 03/02/2011 11:46

Yes, we work for a big corporate, she would get sick pay and she has loads of hours flexi too, so could have taken some if she didnt want it to go on her sick record

I guess it depends how her manager would react to her taking a week off when she "just" has a cold. And what her sick leave total is for the year so far - if she's taken a lot already she may be worried about the effects of taking more.

Have you tried talking to the manager and suggesting he/she should be sending staff home to avoid them infecting everyone else? Personally, I tell my staff to bugger off home and keep their germs to themselves Grin

bubblewrapped · 03/02/2011 11:48

Then she is being a bit selfish.

I can understand it when people are in jobs where they would lose money by being off, and have little choice but to turn up, but when she would be paid, its a different matter.

I am sure she is very work concientious, but spreading your germs to everyone else is a little too generous.

VinegarTits · 03/02/2011 11:50

her sick record is fine (i know because i have access) and our manager would have no issues if she phoned in sick (i know because i dodnt come to work and infect my collegues if i am sick, i ring our manager and stay at home)

I wouldnt personally stay off if I had a cold, if everyone did that we would have no workers!

Maybe she's proud of her sick record and doesnt feel a cold warrants staying off work for.

FabbyChic · 03/02/2011 12:47

I went to work with chicken pox, I also went to work one day after I had a lump removed from my breast with my chest still strapped up.

Some people like work and don't like staying at home for something as pathetic as a cold.

Whilst you say she gets sick pay, sick pay is not payable for the first three days.

TrillianAstra · 03/02/2011 12:50

Could her work be done from home?

BottleOfRum · 03/02/2011 12:50

YABU. I'm sitting in work today having come down with a bout of D&V last night. I've been sick in the toilets twice today and my stomach is awful. But I've got a lot of work to get through, the office is understaffed as it is, and it wouldn't make me any better by lazing around at home. If I'm physically capable of getting up, dressed, and getting into work, I'll go in, no matter how ill I am. People take sick days far too easily IMO, and its especially ridiculous to take sick days over a cold.

VinegarTits · 03/02/2011 12:54

fabbychic why would you go to work with chicken pox when you risk infecting others? CP in adults or in PG women is very dangerous

And SP is payable from day one.

She cant do her work from home but can be covered by the rest of the team

My spots were out and they had all had it.

xstitch · 03/02/2011 12:57

I think going to work with CP is incredibly irresponsible. Going to work after a lumpectomy is brave though.

VinegarTits · 03/02/2011 12:58

well going in when you know you are not infectious anymore is different isnt it? and having a lump removed is not going to infect anyone

monkeyjan is right, she could be infecting people who are more vunerable

How does a bog-standard cold keep you from working in most jobs? A snuffly noise and bit of a chesty cough might make you feel a bit low but it doesn't stop you from practically doing a desk job at the very least. Something highly intensive or with vulnerable people (eg, nurse, carer) is different. But if you're a desk jockey then catch snot in a tissue, bin it, wash hands and don't actively cough in people's faces and you shouldn't spread it around.

I would be very Hmm over anyone in my public sector workplace that took a day off sick at the public expense for a sniffy nose.

VinegarTits · 03/02/2011 12:59

i also think going to work with D&V is irresponsible

OP posts:
trixymalixy · 03/02/2011 13:01

I'm sitting here sneezing and coughing away at work. My boss is one of those " I haven't had a day off sick in 9 years" types and I'm still in my probationary period. I would definitely have called in sick if I was in my previous job, but don't feel like I can here, so I'm being an illness martyr.

TallulahDoesTheHula · 03/02/2011 13:01

Perhaps she doesnt want to have a backlog of work to catch up on waiting for her at work while she sits at home feeling fine but sneezing occasionally.
If she feels well enough to work and its only a cold then why shouldnt she go in?
We all send DCs to school/nursery when they only have a cold dont we?

VinegarTits · 03/02/2011 13:02

she isnt catching it in a tissue and binning it though, shes catching it in a manky hanky that she has been rolling around in her hands all day, and i have seen her wash them once, yet she is answering hpones, opening doors, using the kettle Hmm

havent i should say

I dont send my children to school if they are coughing and sneezing all over the place

TrillianAstra · 03/02/2011 13:05

I agree, going to work with D&V is irresponsible.

Going in with a cold can be done with minimal infection of others, but it doesn't sound like she is.

DarrellRivers · 03/02/2011 13:05

I have had my cold, yes a cold for at least 2 weeks
My work would be beside themselves if I took this time off sick.
I am not unwell, ie feverish. I have a cough/sneeze etc
Does not warrant time off
(feeble bunch)
