Cinemas - why can't people just be quiet?

I went to the cinema yesterday afternoon having not been for years due to people's lack of consideration for others, thinking as it is mid-week in the afternoon, it might not be so bad. I was wrong. Why can't people go without food for 2 hours? Why the need to mutter comments to the person you are with? Why the need to check your mobile? Muppets. I won't be going back again. I'm sure it wasn't like this 20 years ago?

I love going to the cinema, but hate people who talk or don't switch their mobile off.
I don't mind people eating.

meantosay · 03/02/2011 14:14

Also, I agree with maltesers. A lot of teenagers seem to think they own the world nowadays and people should just put up with them no matter what. You see it on buses, in cinemas out on the street, shouting, swearing, pushing and shoving and no regard for anyone around them.

Saltire · 03/02/2011 14:17

The tlaking annoys me too. Also some films i ahve been to with the DSes ahve been ruined by toddlers wandering around tlaking crying etc. ONe filme we saw UP, was spoiled by a child of aobut 4 who had his head between my and DS2's seat for the whole film tlaking "lady what's your name" "boy what's your name" "lady have you got sweets".
Even regularly asking the mum and dad to move him didn't work as " we paid for him to come in here just like you did, he can do what he wants"

Saltire · 03/02/2011 14:18

Maltesers - it s becasue of a generation of teenagers who are (in some cases) being brought up by a geneartion who learned that "they have rights" "I can sue you" etc etc. Their parents (in some cases) didn't have respect and have passed it on to their own teenagers/children

TheMartorialist · 03/02/2011 14:19

I know a number of adults who can't sit through a 2 hour film without using the loo.

Then again, perhaps they ought to turn around and describe in great detail their long/short-term/non-existent bladder issues whilst graciously asking your permission as to whether you may be so kind as to permit them to obscure a minuscule part of your view for a few seconds out of a 2 hour film whilst they rush to and back from the loo?

Or perhaps they shouldn't have the privilege of seeing a movie in the cinema because of your intolerance of their "need" (and trust me, no one wants to miss out on parts of a movie that they have paid to see without good reason, so it is a "need") to use the loo?

kerala · 03/02/2011 14:20

Although meantosay I had to flee to the loo during Black Swan to put my head between my knees the film was so disturbing I thought I was going to faint. COuldnt shut my eyes because of the sound effects - eeeewwww.

TheMartorialist · 03/02/2011 14:22

And it's not just teenagers who disrupt movies at the cinema - as posts on this thread show, it could be adults, children, infants etc. There are many teenagers who peacefully sit through an entire movie but you don't notice them as they ARE sitting quietly. Please don't label an entire generation based on a very very small and unrepresentative portion.

Onetoomanycornettos · 03/02/2011 14:22

See, it's not a classical music concert. I do agree talking is irritating, but if you are at a children's film, children will talk (not mine, as are stuffing their faces with popcorn as well as we consider that part of the fun of going and mysteriously aren't obese). Mine don't as it happens, but a small child asking 'what's going on' every two seconds is pretty par for the course and I accept that before I enter.

Ditto action flims, 3D and popular films, if you want hushed silence, no eating etc, go to an independent cinema where you can hang out with people who feel the same. Mind you, there will be lots more visits to the loo, given the age of the bladders.

meantosay · 03/02/2011 14:42

That's alright Kerala. I spent a lot of that film looking at the floor with a Shock look on my face.

meantosay · 03/02/2011 14:44

TheMart

My friend has a kidney condition and, guess what, she sits at the end seat when she goes to the cinema, not right in the middle so she can disrupt as many people as possible during her frequent trips to the loo. It's called having a bit of common sense.

meantosay · 03/02/2011 14:45

And I don't think it is only a very small percentage of teenagers who behave like that. It is a very significant minority.

upahill · 03/02/2011 14:46

Oh don't get me started on this subject or I may never stop!!

OK I've started.

I can't see why people have to eat. It is completly beyond my comprehension why you can't sit for an hour and a half without stuffing your mouth full of epensive shite!

2 If you are there to see a film watch it. If you think the film is rubbish leave, do something else. You are not in a cafe or bar.

There is usually a bar or cafe around so have your conversation on there.

I went to the local vue last Wednesday ( the above reasons are why I try to avoid going there) and a young couple in front om me and mate chatted about college, turned on the phone so it went all bright. The best I could come up with was 'For fucks sake!! There's a bar downstairs, either watch it or fuck off please.' It wasn't an odd comment about the plot or Natalie Portman it was a fully animated chat with hand gestures and everything. Bloody muppets!

..... and there's more but I'm in danger of enhancing my grumpy old woman staus!

meantosay · 03/02/2011 14:46

Onetoomany

I agree it would be ridiculous to go to a children's film in the middle of the afternoon and complain about noise, going to the loo, munching popcorn etc.

But night time at an adult film, is different.

FabbyChic · 03/02/2011 14:47

Going to the cinema and eating popcorn go hand in hand. Sorry but when I go to the cinema popcorn is a must.

meantosay · 03/02/2011 14:47

What did they say Upahill??

kerala · 03/02/2011 14:49

My fierce friend leaned over to a particularly noisy couple and said "enjoying your picnic" in a very nasty tone. They were obviously terrified Grin.

upahill · 03/02/2011 14:50

Not a word for the rest of the film.

(admittedly the film was crap so I can't blame them on this occasion for wanting a chat!!)

meantosay · 03/02/2011 14:50

LOL Kerala. Good for him.

JamieLeeCurtis · 03/02/2011 14:52

Black Swan though - great film eh?

upahill · 03/02/2011 14:53

Kerala Did you like Black Swan. I know you felt faint but beside that what did you think.

I thought it was comically bad.

I have only fained once at the pictures and that was watching ' Dumplings '

TheMartorialist · 03/02/2011 14:53

And we all know end seats are ALWAYS available Hmm Regardless, I bet there is still an intolerant idiot at the back who thinks, "Crap, what's her problem? Why can't she just sit through the movie? Doesn't she realise that the single strand of hair protruding past the other hairs at a 90 degree angle from her head blocked my view of Natalie Portman's cupid bow at a crucial moment during Black Swan??"

Truth of the matter is, you have a choice as to where and when you see a movie. If you do not like doing this where you could be disturbed by an infinite amount of variables, many of which are encouraged/not disallowed by the cinema itself, then don't go.

upahill · 03/02/2011 14:53

JamieLee was that sarcastic or up beat about Black Swan.

Yes, if you book your tickets in advance, or arrive early, you will always get an end seat, they're not particularly popular for the very reason that people don't want to be constantly disturbed by people going in and out.

People on here are just talking about the frequent occurrences that annoy them at cinemas and people constantly going in and out to the loo, or arriving late and disturbing people, is one of them. No one is talking about every single variable that could annoy them.

JamieLeeCurtis · 03/02/2011 15:01

upahill- no I really liked it. Mad but really well-acted
