Rasta Mice

Am I the only one who keeps thinking that the Cbeebies Rasta Mice are about to pass the dutchie and blaze up a doobie? Can't you just picture the development meeting?
"So, there are these mice, and they live in Jamaica. They absolutely don't smoke or drink Red Stripe. The idea just came to me last night while I was chewing on a delicious brownie."

hang on. I distinctly remember Musical Youth saying on Blue Peter that a dutchie was a big metal cooking pot which you passed so everyone could share the food.

why shouldn't they pass the dutchie? you're not going to tell me this was complete bollocks about the cooking pot are you? Shock

Saltire · 02/02/2011 19:37

Musical Youth now theres a blast from my younger past.
Sorry, off topic totally

duchesse · 02/02/2011 19:38

coughMagicRoundaboutcoughcough! Off their heads, the lot of them.

purplefeet · 02/02/2011 19:39

I find it disturbing that the male mice don't wear trousers, yet the female mice wear skirts.

Rainydaze · 02/02/2011 19:40

Musical Youth sang "Dutchie" (cooking pot), but the original lyric was "Koutchie" which is a cannabis pipe.

The line "How does it feel when you got no food" was originally "How does it feel when you got no weed".

:)

MumInBeds · 02/02/2011 19:41

It was a cover version of "Pass the Koutchie" - they changed it to Dutchie (which really is a cooking pot) to appeal to a wider audience.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 02/02/2011 19:45

I don't think there is a single good kids programme that wasn't thought up whilst under the influence of something.

Anyone remember Polkadot Shorts? Weird Canadiam stuff on tv briefly when DD was newborn (99).

LoopyLoopsPoopaScoop · 02/02/2011 20:40

Love the programme, but (and I know I'm going to sound ridiculous, but...) I'm not sure about toddlers hearing all this "me tinks" "me know" business all the time.

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 02/02/2011 20:52

I wanted to come on and rant about this!

I CAN NOT STAND IT, arrrrgggghhhh I can not believe some of you actually LIKE it.

I want it to die a death as a VERY short lived unwatched programme, Sad thing is my dd has to have a neb at that time everyday, so it's that or a dvd, and as dd's most favourite show in the world Octonuts is on straight after I think I am resigned to my ears bleeding with the irritating down in the hood/ patois vocab.

If any of my dd's mention ting's or me know's tha, I can not be held responsible..

AnnaFalactic · 02/02/2011 21:29

That's just how jamaicans speak generally.

Personally, I think it's fantastic to see something Jamaican on mainstream TV, but then, DD is half jamaican.

She'd hear language like that if she spent time with her "Dad". Hearing it on telly isn't any different.

Anyone remember pob?

tanmu82 · 14/02/2011 11:02

I don't get it OP....are you saying that ALL Jamaicans smoke and drink red stripe?

patois does not go hand in hand with smoking weed - that is offensive stereotyping.

As a person of Caribbean descent myself, I find the show a great addition to an otherwise bland variety of cartoons for young children. doris so does anyone who speaks patois annoy you then Hmm ? Did you know that Patois is actually the national language of Jamaica and has a very distinct grammar - I know this because not only do many in my family speak it, but I studied it in depth for my A Level in English Language.

"me tink" and "me know" are not ungrammatical for Patois - it doesn't work in English granted, but it is grammatically correct patois.

SenoritaViva · 14/02/2011 11:12

I am pleased that DD gets to hear characters with different accents etc. I agree that Tanmu in that you are assuming that all Jamaicans smoke weed and drink red stripe.
