To wonder why the hell people give me hand me down knickers?

Whenever I get a bag of hand me down clothes for my DD it always seems to include used underwear. Now don't get me wrong, I always appreciate second hand clothes. But underwear? I wouldn't want to wear second hand pants, I'm pretty sure the person giving them to me wouldn't want to wear second hand pants, so why should my child?

Overheard 2 women at toddler group discussing a bag of maternity clothes one had brought for the other.

One of them pulled a nighty from the bag and said it looked nice and comfortable. The other said it was, especially for giving birth in. They were joined by a third friend who had also worn the nighty to give birth in.

It just seemed wrong.

Goblinchild · 01/02/2011 20:46

Please donate clean, pre-owned underwear to school. We can usually use them. Smile

cantspel · 01/02/2011 20:47

my sons are only 18 months apart and had a shared stack of pants, socks and vests. Once outgrown if they were still decent then i would pass them on with out outgrown clothing with a word to say anything not wanted just stick in the cloth recycle bin.
Now they are teenagers they each wear different styles of pants so dont really share

Ragwort · 01/02/2011 20:49

I've been pleased to have hand-me-down pants for my DS - and socks for that matter. So long as they are clean I can't see why you would be bothered.

1234ThumbWar · 01/02/2011 20:51

My MIL once brought me a bag of her old knickers and bras, my DH nearly threw up when I told him.

Mumcentreplus · 01/02/2011 20:55

hahaha...i thought I was the only one slightly insulted by second-hand underwear..but I have to say when the going gets tough the pants get worn! Grin

Mumcentreplus · 01/02/2011 20:56

mann thats evil...MIL pants [shocked]

cantspel · 01/02/2011 20:59

my mil died and my oh gave me her old nighties as he thought i might lie them.

Well he got that one wrong and they have been living in a bag in one of the underbed draws ever since as i dont have the heart to chuck them.

cantspel · 01/02/2011 20:59

chucks up a spare k

Hulababy · 01/02/2011 21:08

I take in DD's old pants to the school where I work for the spares box. We are always short of pants, esp for older children, and they do come on handy.

Mumcentreplus · 01/02/2011 21:09

Oh chuck them out!! or sell them on ebay as retro underwear Wink

theresapotatoundermysink · 01/02/2011 21:33

I'll take them into school then. I never know what to do with them as I normally take the reject hand me downs (I get A LOT of hand me downs so have a right to be fussy) to the charity shop...can't imagine they'd want them.

I have bought little girl pants in a charity shop. Some of us have no standards aren't fussy.

Nevertheless, ROFL at the shared nighty the women kept giving birth whilst wearing. That they should advertise on Ebay, and it can get resold each time after a woman has given birth, until the damn thing falls apart or goes missing. All proceeds to charity, of course. But by giving birth in it, you could claim to have been part of the Fluffy-Pink-Silk-Swaziland-LaSenza-Nightie-that-450-women-gave birth-in Club.

My old nct group have a bag of communal pants that have already seen a few girls through potty training now I have them for DD.

Surely anything that gets poo-ed on gets binned, or that's what I do. Anything unscathed is fine for another child.

2rebecca · 01/02/2011 23:42

I suspect alot of folk just put clothes that no longer fit in a bag in the loft and when they hand them on forget to fish out the knickers. I've probably done that.

hellymelly · 01/02/2011 23:45

I give friends dds outgrown underwear, never imagined it would be any different to a vest? Its all washed! She has Petit Bateau and it costs a small fortune and still looks as good as new so it seems very silly to bin it.Mind you I happily wear 1930's knickers meself,Lord knows how many women have worn them before me.

musicposy · 01/02/2011 23:55

Our loo seat broke the other day and whilst bemoaning the fact to my parents, Dad said he had his eye on a new one and we could have their old one if we liked. Shock When I said no thanks, my Mum thought I was insulting her cleaning!

I wasn't; it's always lovely and clean - but seriously, would you have a second hand loo seat? That has to be worse than pants!

I suggested he put it on freecycle - or even ebay Grin

ragged · 02/02/2011 00:40

I've been trying to freecycle a Never-Used toilet seat for ages, nobody will take it (arrrgh).

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 02/02/2011 01:39

I like buying new little pants/knickers so wouldn't use 'passed on ones' particularly, but I agree with Laurie, little kids aren't like adults with grotty discharges etc so it's not the same. I would give them to the nursery/school - they never have enough!! I take it that any of you that wouldn't use them/pass them on have never had a child come home with nursery/school pants on Grin

kreecherlivesupstairs · 02/02/2011 08:23

Our fragrant DD has many pairs of knickers. I've never received any hand me downs, mind you, I've never got any sort of hand me down Sad.
Once she has outgrown her knickers, they go to school for the younger children in case of an accident. School always seem happy to have them.
