News full of police/govt street crime site

The site opened today and is all over the news/phone-in programmes

It is said to be attracting millions of enquiries and a lot of customers are finding it blocked.

You are supposed to be able to tap in your postcode and get crime details.

I will wait till it settles down. "Gabby"

PS At this stage I dont know if it is a good idea or not

70 odd here, only 4 burglaries, but where I grew up 512 Shock. Seemed pretty bad but tbh we knew it was a shit area, still never actually experienced any crime.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 02/02/2011 08:39

The road we are moving to is virtually crime free [big] Grin. The area as a whole is pretty bad though Sad

AtYourCervix · 02/02/2011 08:46

35 in my town.

3 burglaries, 9 anti-social behaviour, 2 violent crime, some vehicle, 20 other. one at all in the streets around where I live.

PlentyOfParsnips · 02/02/2011 08:53

hmmmm ... 621 total, 101 violent, which sounds high, but I'm in S London and was under the impression this was one of the roughest bits. Looking at some of the other numbers on this thread, I'm actually (slightly) pleasantly surprised.

upahill · 02/02/2011 08:56

Not much in my neighbourhood. A few anti social crimes and the odd vehicle crime and that's about it.

working9while5 · 02/02/2011 09:02

128 and 14 violent crimes, 4 on the adjoining road Shock

sixlostmonkeys · 02/02/2011 09:10

a few things to consider when looking at these figures -
they are 'reported crimes' so, in a 'good' area you may get a lot of 'reports' just because some pesky kids are playing in the street. In a 'bad' area there may not be many reports if the community have no faith in the police.
Violent crimes are often domestic, so this would not mean you are likely to be attacked when walking to the shop...
If there is a pub nearby, the figures for ASB will be higher.

BreconBeBuggered · 02/02/2011 09:11

Shit, just looked at my town and according to the map there was a burglary IN MY HOUSE sometime during the last month. The marker is on the corner of two streets which is where I live. Right side of the road as well. WTF?

Firawla · 02/02/2011 09:13

i think this site is a waste of money if they are making cuts on other things, we dont need a website mapping burglaries ffs, you can get crime figures anyway. i think its a lame gimmick personally

PlentyOfParsnips · 02/02/2011 09:13

Brecon, the site says To protect privacy, individual addresses are not pinpointed on the map. Crimes are mapped to an anonymous point on or near the road where they occurred.

GrimmaTheNome · 02/02/2011 09:13

Apparently there was a quiet street in Preston which came up as terrible ... its postcode meant it got everything for the whole city centre applied to it. The figures didn't match reality.

BreconBeBuggered · 02/02/2011 09:16

So my house is the anonymous point? They must mean the middle of the road or something. Haven't been burgled yet anyway.

thunderbird69 · 02/02/2011 09:21

Would the fact that the figures are for December be significant? I know that round here there's a lot more drunkenness at Xmas and New Year, so more ASB as a result?

GrimmaTheNome · 02/02/2011 09:25

I just tried and it said there was no policing area which matched my search.

DuelingFanjo · 02/02/2011 09:27

59 violent crimes in my area.
570 total crimes!

wow.

Aerobreaking · 02/02/2011 09:34

3 crimes total in my postcode area where I grew up in!
Where I live now - 857 (London)
Don't feel scared though, never directly experienced crime here.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 02/02/2011 09:36

I feel rather good about my village!

only 7 crimes in december. in the whole village!

no burglary, no vehicle crime, no robbery, 5 anit-social behaviours (I'm guessing alcohol related!) one violent crime Sad and one 'other'.
