to want to take youngsters who wear FAR too much make up aside and wash their faces forcibly with a scratchy flannel

I mean honestly.

Girl in tesco today had what can only be described as inch thich orange foundation, eyebrows coloured in with (looked like) a felt tip pen and 800 layers of mascara.

Do these girls not look in the mirror? She looked like Cher from the X factor - utterly hideous.

Women do look better when they have natural faces don't they. I don't mean completly without make up but that whole thick foundation/mascara over the top look makes them look horible.

HowAnnoying · 01/02/2011 15:37

YABU - most girls go through a stage of wearing too much make-up. It takes a few years of experimenting to learn what that suits you best.

DurhamDurham · 01/02/2011 15:45

I know what you mean but it's all about them finding their own style. Most grow out of it (hopefully) and find what suits them best.
I was a Goth as a teen and wore huge amounts of white foundation, black kohl and mascara. But it didn't mean I wasn't a nice person and I had feelings. My mum used to say " I hope people can see that you are pretty under all that muck on your face!!".....but she never tried to stop me.

I've two teen girls and am v relaxed about what they choose to wear and how they have their hair/makeup. I would draw the line at the tracksuit and huge gold hoop earring chav look Grin

Sidge · 01/02/2011 15:47

Oh I'm all for experimenting with make up (fondly remembers electric blue mascara and Twilight Teaser lipstick) - but the trend of the moment seems to be You Can Never Wear Enough Slap.

You can, my lovelies, you can. The Edwina Spatulahands look is Not A Good One.

BuntyPenfold · 01/02/2011 15:54

Are you my old headmistress?

PatPending · 01/02/2011 17:03

As I gaze around my classes and see the little orange faces and white necks gazing back at me I often want to set to with a pan scourer.
And the fake tan look - fine if you want to look like you've been dipped in gravy browning. But not usually a good look with Celtic colouring.
It's a bit soul destroying when I have to spend the first 5 minutes of every lesson saying "Chardonnay, put that lip gloss away", "Shania, don't spray your cheap perfume please, it's making me wheeze", "Versace, the application of bright red fever spots blusher can wait until home time.
Marvellous.

ZZZenAgain · 01/02/2011 17:05

YANBU. How can they think they look good, I don't know? Mind you when we were teenagers, it was probably the same. We thought we looked good but maybe we didn't.

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/02/2011 17:05

I do sound like an old fart don't I? Grin

I have always loved wearing make up, however this has completly passed my dd by. She wears some on very special occasions (for which she thieves my stuff and loses it) but generally she wears no make up at all.

She is so pretty as well I am glad she is not caking it on.

ZZZenAgain · 01/02/2011 17:06

but why that awful orangey stuff?

FabbyChic · 01/02/2011 17:07

I did not wear make up until I was 17.

I have to wonder where the parents are of these young girls.

They shouldn't be walking around looking 18 when they are only 14.

Shame on the parents.

cocolepew · 01/02/2011 17:12

Don't forget the fringes that start at the back of their heads and are sprayed within an inch of their lives.

cocolepew · 01/02/2011 17:13

I blame Jordon

springbokdoc · 01/02/2011 17:16

I knew I was old when I was out at a club in winter and my comment re a bunch of girls in tiny tiny skirts was they were going to catch a death of a cold.

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/02/2011 17:20

My dd has one of those fringes coco - it starts at the base of her spine and goes over in a side sweep, hamlet cigar ad stylee.

She sprays it with christ knows how much hairspray - I have stopped buying Elnett and get sainsbos hairspray now as it was costing a fortune.

Orange foundation - I remember buying an Estee Lauder foundation, the girl behond the counter asked if I wanted it my true colour or a shade darker 'so i would look like I had a bit of colour'.

OP posts:
ZZZenAgain · 01/02/2011 17:21

they will all cringe one day when they look back on the old photos

everyone does

cocolepew · 01/02/2011 17:28

I'm always waiting for the wind to blow and the fringe to pop up like a flip top bin. So far I've been disappointed.

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/02/2011 17:30

yes, because it is fixed with such a high level of spray you would need napalm to make it move.

Fabbychic - I got a chance to see one of the parents in Boots on Saturday. Girl with the thick makeup accompanied by a mother even more orange than she was. Mother looked like Cher (the old one not Ms Lloyd). I am sure it was not fake bake or foundation but maybe varnish? Does Cuprinol do make up?

Newgolddream · 01/02/2011 19:43

I looked exactly like this last Saturday actually thanks very much............but since it was an 80s dress up party I think it was acceptable!Grin

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 01/02/2011 19:49

You could probably just prise the Kaye of makeup off with your finger nail. Why waste a flannel!
What REALLY bugs me, are those fringes that go sideways from ear to ear! I'm assuming that's to hide the zits caused by the inch thick makeup!
And don't get me started on BLOODY FUCKING HORRIBLE HAREM PANTS!!! I just want to grab their waist band and shake them into their trousers properly! They have me itching to reach for th extra pair of knickers (to go over the saggy tights!)
At least back in the eighties we had taste!!

notyummy · 01/02/2011 19:51

Saggy - lets not get carried away here. I remember some pretty shocking sights in the eighties too!

Asinine · 01/02/2011 19:55

Maybe they think if their skin never sees daylight they will scrub it all off when 40 and look ridiculously youngGrin

Sidge · 02/02/2011 10:00

On the basis of this thread I watched Snog, Marry, Avoid last night.

ZZZenAgain · 02/02/2011 10:02

80's were not really so tasteful...

I know, I was there
