to ask DH not to cycle to work?

DH will be working in London again soon and would like to cycle to work rather than get the tube. I'm very uncomfortable about this because he would have to cross the whole of central London and some busy main roads to get to the centre of town.

We both used to cycle to work but this was pre children and I think the stakes are higher now should anything happen to him. I've seen for myself how some London drivers behave and also don't entirely trust him not to take the odd risk although he's generally a safe cyclist.

Have I blown the risk out of all proportion and AIBU?

Just get him to wear a helmet.

My friend is an A&E doctor who tells me nearly all the cycling deaths she encounters professionally are caused by people's heads hitting the edge of the kerb as they're knocked off. If you're wearing a helmet you'll still be hurt but not killed.

He'll quickly become comfortable with and aware of the more uncomfortable parts of his route. He could even do a session with the LCC (London Cycling Campaign) to find him the best route to work and do a dry run with him. This is free but he would have to book a way ahead.

he'll probably be likely to live longer given that he'll most likely be fitter than if he didn't cycle commute.

london is much more cycle friendly now than it was when i cycled, and when i did i felt relatively safe due to the fact the cars barely get over 20mph and are actually stationary most of the time.

He always wears a helmet and a luminous jacket toerags but I hadn't really considered that lots of the deaths would be down to lack of helmet. I think he'd really like to do the LCC session too (I'd like him too as well).

Argh, can't find it on the LCC website now. That's annoying. I'm sure a phone call would help! Sorry!
