to think it's ok for a man to keep a diary

This is a thread about a thread, where there were other more important issues. However, some posters seemed to think that a man who get a diary was weird and should be ditched. I think it's fine for a man to keep a diary as it is for a woman. AIBU?

I could be with a man who wrote songs, but not one who wrote a diary. To me it reminds me of a schoolgirls behaviour, and in a bloke it just seems self indulgent and slightly bizarre.

JamieLeeCurtis · 31/01/2011 17:03

I don't think it's unreasonable. It would strike me as unusual unless

a) he is a writer, or wants to be
b) he is in therapy or working out an emotional issue by keeping a diary at the suggestion of other people

JamieLeeCurtis · 31/01/2011 17:04

... I have no empirical evidence for the fact it is unusual, BTW. I just think it

jazzchickens · 31/01/2011 17:05

DH has always kept a diary. He doesn't write in it every day but keeps notes of special events, DC's milestones etc. At the end of the year he writes me a poem that incorporates the events of each month. Its fantastic! I don't have to remember anything as he does it all for me.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 31/01/2011 17:15

It's perfectly reasonable for anyone to keep a diary if they want to, of course it is.

However, I am genuinely amazed to learn that adults keep diaries. I always thought that keeping a diary was the self indulgent dramatic crap we all grow out of at the end of our teens.

I'm not talking record of important events, I would imagine it's quite common for people to do that. I'm talking daily outpourings. eg

Saw X today, my heart stopped beating, I feel blah blah dramatic cringy shit feel how I feel yadda yadda nobody understands me

Or daily pointless facebookesque crap. went for a shit went for a walk scratched my fanny...

I never knew adults did that.

I mean, I don't give a flying fuck one way or the other Grin I just never knew adults did it!

JamieLeeCurtis · 31/01/2011 17:24

Yes Hecate, now I think about it, what I said above would equally apply to women as well. I do think it's unusual.

InterruptingCow · 31/01/2011 20:52

You do realise I'm going to write pages of angst in my diary about how some nasty MNetters think I'm weird for keeping a diary Wink.

TiggyD · 31/01/2011 22:09

I would have said it was perfectly OK...

...until the OP said it was and this thread is just for self-validation. Now I'm going to say YABU. All men who keep diaries are perverts and nut cases who park in disabled parking spaces while giving lifts to fish and cow eating vegetarians who wax their lady-gardens.

The modern day version of a diary is surely a blog? A lot of people write blogs - a weblog to give its full name is just a diary or 'log' kept on the web.

Bucharest · 01/02/2011 08:17

Ah, but a blog is surely something far more vain....The aim of blogs is less to do with keeping a record of one's thoughts and more to do with wanting to be applauded by others for doing so, surely?

There are some beautiful, funny, why-has-this-person-not-been-given-a-publishing-deal blogs around.

And then there are the other 99.9%.

All thanks to the anyone-can-be-famous-even-the-most-untalented-wannabe generation we are breeding.

I have changed my mind having read these posts! I said at first it was odd but now I wish Dp kept one.
