to be annoyed that FIL is obsessed with my weight?

When I met DH 14 years ago, I was a size 12. 14 years and 2 kids later, it had crept up to a 16.
This summer, when DS turned 2, I went on a health kick and lost over a stone. My FIL was delighted. In September DC3 was conceived. When we came over for Christmas (we don't live in the same country), you should have seen his face when he saw me.
We just called them on Skype, and MIL asked "are you well" and FIL asked "Have you put any weight?"
WTF? What is it to him.
This is the man when I was pregnant with DC1 told me to hide my pregnant belly when I was proudly showing it on Skype told me to put it away as it was disgusting.

He has issues, and clearly crosses a line in making personal remarks.

AgentZigzag · 30/01/2011 17:31

Well he sounds disgusting tbh, and more than a bit odd.

Like you say, WTF is it to him?? Confused

How do you react when he opens his gob?

Maternelle · 30/01/2011 17:32

With hindsight, I should have said "I have reached 20 stone" or something. I was gob smacked.

YANBU your weight is none of his business.

elmofan · 30/01/2011 17:52

YANBU - I think you need to pull him up on his comments tbh a simple " What do you mean by that" might make him cop on .

Maternelle · 30/01/2011 17:55

I do get on quite well with him apart from this weird trait. Next time, I WILL say something.
It's not like he or MIL are particularly svelte anyway. I don't get it.

saffy85 · 30/01/2011 17:56

YANBU Shock what a fucking cheek he has!

My MIL is obsessed with weight in general and has made comments in the past but she's never actually offended me with it- I put it down to her own insecurities.

Maybe make personal remarks back. "woah there FIL, check out that receding hairline! Have you googled cures for it yet?" Or if you can stomach it, "I've heard mens' dicks get smaller with age hows your's measuring up?"

Or tell him to STFU and mind his own business. Which incidently is something your DH should have done by now. A size 16 is hardly mahoosive. It's nt like you need a crane to leave the bloody house is it Hmm

Millenniumbug · 30/01/2011 18:00

I've had 18 years of awful comments from truly awful in-laws. Here's what I ask myself: Does my DH love me, is he proud of me? Am I a good partner for him? Do my chn love me, am I the best Mum I can be to them? Do my parents love me, are they proud of me & my family? The answer is yes, so who the H* are these other people, who quite frankly, I don't rate & whose opinion is meaningless. Look yourself in the mirror, ask those questions & pathetic, rather warped, (certainly not normal), comments, will fade into the insignificance that they deserve. Hold your head high - you sound like a brilliant Mum & wife to me. (Perhaps IL's are jealous??)

AgentZigzag · 30/01/2011 18:00

'Just how wrinkly are your nads now FIL?' Grin

No! You don't want to know OP!

Pancakeflipper · 30/01/2011 18:01

My FIL ( I love him dearly but he drives me bonkers) makes comments on my weight. It is utterly annoying.

I was size 10 when I first met him. Between pregnancies I was a size 14 and now a size 12. And the comments he's made have tracked my weight gain and loss. We don't see each other often.

And he looks like a little budda with a huge cuddly tum.

My BIL says it's cos' he'd fancy me if it wasn't so inappropiate, the first time he met me he said " if I was in my prime I'd marry her.".

So maybe your FIL lusts after you!

HecateQueenOfWitches · 30/01/2011 19:27

Would "why do you care? I'm sleeping with your son, not you." be considered too confrontational? Grin

Maternelle · 30/01/2011 19:34

Aaaargh Pancakeflipper, please don't.
I wish I had the guts Hecate. He is also pretty repressed so I don't think that would go down well. I need to say "What is it to you really"!

OP posts:
Chulita · 30/01/2011 19:35

My FIL's similar except he points out young ladies when we're out and comments on how slim they are Hmm He also pointedly comments on both DH and my fitness levels as if it's any of his business. Last time he told DH he was putting on weight I gave DH's arse a good squeeze and said 'I love your son's body' he wasn't quite sure what to say Grin

Chulita · 30/01/2011 19:36

fwiw my FIL's totally repressed too...

saffy85 · 30/01/2011 21:06

I like Hecate's response best actually. Grin

LittleMissHissyFit · 30/01/2011 21:31

Honestly, you don't think a What has it got to do with you would go down well?

Stuff him! When ARE you going to stand up to him? He has no right to comment on anything to do with you!

RevoltingPeasant · 30/01/2011 21:36

My own dad is very like this... Well, you know how small children pick up everything they hear....

Once when I was about 4 I mortified him by saying loudly in public, 'Look Daddy, she's a bit of all right, isn't she!'

Oddly, he knocked off those sort of comments Grin

OP, just say, 'Yes, well, I'm not worried about it' and change the subject. You can't really be rude to your FIL if you otherwise get on well, but a brisk response ought to give him a hint (or more likely MIL who will tell him to STFU later).

NimpyWindowmash · 30/01/2011 21:42

YANBU.
Cheeky buggar. Perhaps he has issues with his own or his wife's weight and is projecting on to you.

My FIL is a bit like this. We went to visit when I had given birth by cs about 5 days earlier, I still looked fairly pregnant, and he asked me if I had an exercise regime to get me back into shape. I was like this Shock.

MoaningMedalllist · 30/01/2011 21:48

YANBU
its not his buisness I'd tell your DH to have a word tbh.

verytellytubby · 30/01/2011 21:48

Wanker

FabbyChic · 30/01/2011 21:50

Maybe he is fatist, some people are.

Some have a big aversion to fat, I used to have until I got chunky myself!

Goodynuff · 30/01/2011 21:52

I'd just say "I'm married now, I don't have to look after myself anymore. Phew, no more make up, or hair cuts, or anything..." but I'm an asshole that way Wink
