In thinking the Coalition government have got it in for families?

The government have said they want Britain to be the "most family-friendly country in Europe". So why since getting into power have they launched an all-out attack on the services and support for families by cutting them or proposing to cut them?
First it was child tax credits, then child benefit, sports in schools, bookstart and now Sure Start centres. Where will this end? My local county council are proposing to axe around a third of the sure start centres, so what are families with young children going to do. By removing the child benefit for some families and proposing means-testing access to Children's centres, where will families get the money to pay for these? It wasn't young children who got this country into the mess they claim it is in.

YANBU
they are rich, entitled cunts.

trixie123 · 28/01/2011 22:02

Sports in schools, bookstart and surestart centres are all great but we CANNOT afford them. Why do you say "the mess they claim it is in"? Do you not believe in the deficit? The CB cut is unfortunate and will affect us but we will not starve without it - those who would are still going to get it. tax credits I can't comment on but your entire post suggests that you really don't have much of a grasp of the realities of the country's finances.

curlymama · 28/01/2011 22:05

They are cutting these things because they cost alot, not because they have an out an out hatred of families ffs.

Families are not the only people that are going to be affected by what's going on.

TattyDevine · 28/01/2011 22:06

They are cunts who want us to die and die and die and die.

Hmm
DorisIsAPinkDragon · 28/01/2011 22:09

I think families is too specific they have it in for anyone (or anything) who they regard as a drain on the their tax bill public purse .

i.e disabled people(the changes to DLA, are going to impact enormously on the lives of people).

Booandpops · 28/01/2011 22:21

I don't see why they are cutting childrens centres now they are built. Crazy waste of money. I'm furious I know cuts are needed but they are stripping everything bare I never use the c word but in this case I would!!!!

tomhardyismydh · 28/01/2011 22:29

but trixi the sports centres sure star and bookstart are the services along with many others that may provide the stability for some families and learning for some children that will prevent them from encountering "crisis" that the government and tax payers will in the long run foot the bill for.

tomhardyismydh · 28/01/2011 22:35

my local sure start work in partnership in monitor many families who ss do not ahve the resourses or power to intervien with but who certanly require a level of support. so what happens when this has gone they will be come a crisis intervention case load in which the LA are required to spend on a package to meet thier needs. or worst case senario become part of the under resoursed care system. is the government planning on boosting funds for children in care to counter act this deficit?

GypsyMoth · 28/01/2011 22:36

thought the sports in schools was reinstated after much begging??

GypsyMoth · 28/01/2011 22:37

and dont forget the students and also loss of EMA

tomhardyismydh · 28/01/2011 22:39

Who else other than families is being affected then curly? oh yes there are disabled people also? scratches head thinking who else!!!Hmm cant think of anyone else. can you?

gordyslovesheep · 28/01/2011 22:45

public sector workers

curlymama · 28/01/2011 22:49

Maybe you can't think of anything else because the majority of people are part of a family somewhere.

Students have been affected, but they will most likey be affected as young singles, not small children or parents.

tomhardyismydh · 28/01/2011 22:51

granted yes, but those public sector workers I have included with out mention. they are the people who may are providing these services and do need recognition. They may also have a family to support and may now require such services that are being cut.

tomhardyismydh · 28/01/2011 22:53

I think students most definatly will be affected as a family and less likely as young singles.

curlymama · 28/01/2011 22:55

I expect they will, a bit. But as they don't have to pay until they start earning, there is every chance they will be living away from the home and supporting themselves when the biggest effect takes place.

huddspur · 28/01/2011 23:08

The measures to reduce the deficit are going to affect all aspects and beneficiaries of public spending including families.

2shoes · 28/01/2011 23:10

YANBU they will keep targeting the vulnerable they will pretend to car but won't
the rich will get richer and the poor and disabled will get poorer

pascoe28 · 28/01/2011 23:12

State-subsidised families do need to have money taken off them.

Parenthood is a lifestyle choice and it is not the business of Government to support it.

If you can't have children without benefits you shouldn't have them.

Time for self-reliance, people.

huddspur · 28/01/2011 23:15

pascoe- If only people who had enough money to have children without benefits had children then we'd have a demographic crisis as the population went into a rapid decline.

mamatomany · 28/01/2011 23:19

To be fair if you were a single person for the last 10 years as three of my siblings are they've been taking it on the chin heavily. Imagine having the bills and outgoings of say half your average family but without all the tax credits etc just average wages and it's not been easy for them to manage at all.

2shoes · 28/01/2011 23:20

pascoe28 .............children are our future

curlymama · 28/01/2011 23:25

Good point mama.

We only need so many children because so many elderly people rely on the state. If we got into a position where people provided for their own retirement, we wouldn't need as many taxpayers, or as many people to be born.

We don't have the space or the housing or the infrastructure for the birthrate to continue being so high forever.

mamatomany · 28/01/2011 23:26

children are our future

hmmm true but we do need quality over quanity these days, most children survive to adulthood and there aren't the number of manual jobs for those who aren't academic.
I worry the quality of life of the children born into difficult circumstances is going to be dreadful in 15 years time.

ccpccp · 28/01/2011 23:31

Its no good encouraging a huge rise in kids, if the majority of those kids are going to go staight onto benefits becasue thats all they've ever known or aspire to.

Subsidising the benefits class at the expense of the working and middle classes is pretty illogical eugenics TBH.

Pascoe is right.
