So, DS (5) has to wear 70s fancy dress for school on Tuesday (letter came today but that's another story!). I havent a clue what to put him that is cheap, easy to do and that he will wear. Help!

turn him into a hippy

beads, sunglasses, jeans, something with flower power on it..

ballstoit · 28/01/2011 20:28

sounds pretty straightforward

now to persuade DS!

Flared jeans. Outrageous shirt with a floppy collar. Big sunglasses and a toilet chain for a necklace! A fake hairy chest would be good.

I was a child in the 70s. From my experience, I'd suggest shit brown flared cords and an orange tank top. But I can see you might have some trouble finding them! Grin

a lot of cheap girls' trousers are surprisingly flarey and do look very 70s when you put them on a boy.

KathyImLost · 28/01/2011 20:34

You can turn a cheap / old pair of jeans or trousers into flares by cutting up the side seams and inserting a triangle of fabric.

You might then just want to give him a t-shirt with some flowers painted on.

tie dye a cheap t shirt
turn old jeans into flares with old fabric
beads
etc etc

Booandpops · 28/01/2011 21:06

Superman or star wars characters. Very seventies or a hiawain shirt for hawi 5 o

ballstoit · 28/01/2011 22:06

You could do him up as a punk. Rip some old clothes up a bit, spike his hair and hold some of the rips together with safety pins.

NorthernGobshite · 28/01/2011 22:15

cheap dye
plain t shirt rubber bands

put rubber bands around random bits of t shirt in various sizes etc and dye. I am crap at explaining. Will find link.....

NorthernGobshite · 28/01/2011 22:18

here

keep it simple, use one colour, and use cold dye in a bucket or you will be rinsing your washing machine for a month!!

get 5 year old involved with the tying and rubber bands and he will def wear it as its amazing for kids to see what it turns into.

tie dye is easy, though fiddly. you can buy dye from sewing shop/ some department stores. you will need an old bucket, salt and big elastic bands.
lay the t shirt flat on a flat surface.
if you want one big circle effect, pinch the t shirt about 2/3 of the way up and put an elastic band around the lump to make the centre of your circle. hold the t shirt by the centre of the circle and bunch up the rest of the material into a long tight sausage. put elastic bands at intervals along the sausage, wrapping them around several times. this gives the circle effect on the t shirt. you get undyed bits where the material is pleated or held by elastic bands. you can get lots of circles by bunching up the material in several places.

if you want a spiral effect, lay the t shirt out flat pinch the material about 2/3 of the way up and twist the material into a flat spiral ( Sort of disc shape rather than sausage shape) hold it together with elastic bands.

dip the tied up t shirts into the dye. Follow the instructions on the pack, not sure if the all need salt. you will have to rinse and rinse and rinse at the end.

I am not sure if all that makes sense as I normally show how it is done than say.

Get hold of a square of thick material, something that won't fray (old blanket from charity shop?) Measure from one of his wrists to the other, use that as the length for each side. Glue on flower shapes cut from scrap fabric/un-recyclable old clothes. Cut a slit in the middle of the square about 12 inches long, running in the direction from one corner to the opposite corner. Slip it over his head.
70's Poncho!

tie dying is fun!
you can get cold water dyes and washing machine dyes too, which simplify things.
if you can't get hold of dye you can tie-bleach, which is not quite such a good effect but still good.
