Should I try to make NLP techniques work?

I recently went on a work course teaching communication skills. It turned out to be mainly based on NLP, which I wasn't expecting at all. There was a lot of stuff on preferred representational systems and predicates which I couldn't really relate to my own experience at all (of myself or of others). I found it hard to imagine how I would use the techniques - I'm not sure I'd be able to concentrate on the particular words that people are using as well as the meaning of what they're saying, or at least, not easily. I'm also not really sure how reliable the theories are. Should I put in the effort to try to use the theories, or ditch them?

The only thing I remember from my NLP training is that if you ask someone a question and they look up to the right that means they're lying....or was it look up to the left?? Hmm

I think it's like a lot of training, you walk out thinking I've learnt something there, and forget the lot by the time you get to your car!!

My boss went on a Paul MeKenna workshop and now belives that he can 'read us' by making constant eye-contact Biscuit...but we have a cunning way around this...we just avoid his gaze!

lololizzy, most of the techniques you cite are actually based on CBT which NLP plagerises terribly.

hmmm someone else said that to me Northern' and that i would be crazy to consider Lighterlife again ( cost at least 1k well it did last time i did it) when i could do a diet for half that price and do CBT...maybe time for a rethink..cannot afford LL but getting married this yr

sorry to hog this thread but whilst on here does anyone mind me asking?? does CBT work for nightmares? have been told this can..has anyone tried? as in, only have nightmares..never good or neutral dreams

CBT is very good for lots of things, but not sure about nightmares as its unconscious thought? But maybe if addressing things in waking life then you might have nicer dreams?

I have been coached by an NLP practitioner and I can say that it really made a difference to me in my career and my interactions with people. It was a great boost of confidence. I then continued on to do my NLP qualification last year in the summer, i would definitely recommend that you do it, it can also be used in the home and with Children www.cosensconsultancy.com/ is the company that I used, take a look at Pauls site xx
