AIBU to not clear up after my dog?

There's a sign on a gate on the next street to me which tells dog owners they have to clean up their dogs URINE on the hedge next to the gate (apparently the dogs have a liking for the hedge specifically) because the owner has children who play in the garden and it's extremely unhygenic and dangerous. (That's what it says)

Granted I have a particularly dense old dog who tends to stop DEAD and do his business the INSTANT he feels the need (including when you're in the middle of the road ) and there's no stopping him....you can pull him on and he'll waddle along still doing it until he has finished which makes even more of a mess....!

But I don't see how I can clean up dog urine? Or stop him from urinating on the hedge? I can drag him away from the hedge but he will wee all the way. I can't really avoid walking past the hedge. I live in fear of him weeing on it and the home owner coming out.

I'm not advocating for dog urine as an attractive or beautifully scented liquid, I know it's pretty yuck. But surely a large amount of gardens, parks....wherever up and down the country are regularly doused in the amber nectar. Including my own garden. Where children play!

AIBU not to hover under my dog with a plastic bottle and rubber glove every time we go out? Or perhaps a mop and bucket?

spray some anti-bac stuff on top maybe?

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 27/01/2011 19:56

carry a squirty water bottle and sluice it away. i dont think tehy are being UR to ask peopel to do this. it is their hedge and you wouldn't want your children playing where dogs had peed.

narkypuffin · 27/01/2011 19:57

Is the hedge on their property?

RIZZ0 · 27/01/2011 19:59

Would I be right in thinking the dogs pee on the outside of the hedge and her children play in the garden on the inside of the hedge?

If so she needs to get a grip. She can't enforce this.

Iwantscallops · 27/01/2011 20:00

Walk on the other side of the road?

I wouldn't want a dog peeing on my garden.

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 27/01/2011 20:01

I can remember a house next to our local park having a similar notice requesting politely that dog owners refrain from allowing their dogs to use the hedge, as the sheer number of dogs meant it was killing the hedge.

I don't think it would be unreasonable to accept their request, walk your dog on a short lead past this particular hedge, it can't be nice if your hedge is the local dog toilet, and you're left with the pissy smells day in day out.

skybluepearl · 27/01/2011 20:01

why don't you walk on the other side of the road?

i understand they bought a house where people walk but would it be acceptable for people to leave their dog's poo there? the people have a right to ask memebers of the public to clean away their dog's wee from their poperty.

a human shitting at your garage is just -eugh!!!

NormalityBites · 27/01/2011 20:09

The hedge is on their property but sticks out onto the pavement. Fairly thick hedge, 7-8ft tall. Certainly not in the least bit dead. It is on a corner so just using the other side of the road is not really practical.

As I say, my dog has never 'used' it. I jiust live in fear that he might! If we're supposed to clear up wee now I'd like to know.

And yes, the dogs wee on the outside, the kids play on the inside. Probably a good 3ft away at least. Though of course wee can be pretty....projectile in nature Grin

"If we're supposed to clear up wee now I'd like to know."

i think the sign is letting you know Grin

just carry a bottle of water with you. and relax. it might never happen. you could teach your dog to pee before his walk if you are worried.

coatgate · 27/01/2011 20:13

Signs have gone up in the fields where many people walk their dogs asking owners to pick up poo wherever the dogs do it - there are 4 big fields each with footpaths and dogs are let off the lead, but they have also asked not to let dogs urinate on the haylage (which is wrapped up). Can be quite difficult controlling where your dog urinates - a lot of it is just scent marking.

I shouldn't worry, I doubt it is enforceable, maybe just try to avoid it.

Violethill · 27/01/2011 20:13

I wouldn't want dog piss on my hedge - they aren't being unreasonable.

narkypuffin · 27/01/2011 20:13

If it hangs out over the pavement then they are being seriously OTT. YANBU, but I'd just try to put yourself between the dog and the hedge to avoid getting shouted at.

RIZZ0 · 27/01/2011 20:14

Fuck me. Then she really needs to gerrof her high horse Normality

I have a problem with a sneaky jack russell who somehow gets in to my dogproofed garden and shits on my patio, cocks his leg on my hen house and tries to coax my lovely pooch in to a fight. How I wish he would just pee on the outside of my hedge whilst not actually on my property

clevercloggs · 27/01/2011 20:38

sod that for a laugh

Ladyofthehousespeaking · 27/01/2011 20:44

Carrying a bottle of water won't kill you

sazzle1234 · 27/01/2011 20:56

i so think sometimes dog owners don't appreciate how non dog owners often feel about their mess. I was in the supermarket car park the other week loading the shopping in the boot of my car when a woman walking her dog passed allowed it to pee on my wheel. Now i know it hasn't done my wheel any harm and i probably drive thru worse but that's just bad manners. When I looked at her and said excuse me, she just smiled like it was no big deal!!!

NormalityBites · 27/01/2011 20:57

If the dreaded event occurs and I have water with me I will pointlessly sluice the soil, I promise.

I'm not starting to carry a bottle of water for washing down dog wee though I'm afraid. Perhaps for that AIBU Smile

OP posts:
NormalityBites · 27/01/2011 21:01

I know how non dog owners feel about the mess. I haven't always owned a dog. Odd to generalise so. I'd never allow a dog to use an inappropriate place without moving them away swiftly and apologising profusely....then cleaning said area if possible.

I find dog mess vile and heave inducing,I clean it up anyway. Because that's just what you do.

VivaLeBeaver · 27/01/2011 21:08

When you get level with their hedge could you walk so you're between the dog and the hedge? Then the dog is less likely to sniff and wee. I try not to let my dog wee on hedges/plants/fences that are the boundary of peoples' gardens. Though everyone who walks dogs past my garden lets them pee up the gate post.

midori1999 · 27/01/2011 21:09

My dogs wee in my garden and the DC play in it and they have never been ill as a result. (In fact they aren't really ever ill)

The person with the sign is being precious. I can understand people getting upset when dog poo isn't cleared up, but wee? I think you'll just have to suck it up and clear up after your dog to prevent any bad feeling though.

On the other hand, cats shite everywhere and people just accept that as 'what cats do'.

clevercloggs · 27/01/2011 21:10

the dog will probably want to keep weeing there because he is marking his territory and can smell other dogs wee there
