Paying an arm and a leg for printer cartidges

Is anyone else fed up with paying out ££££s for printer cartridges?
Our printer is an Epson and the black + 3 colours would be £35 to replace. Even though I buy the cheap non-Epson ones from Tes-- it is still expensive to run. The whole thing won't print in black if ONE of the colours is empty, not even if the black one is still full.
I reckon it costs at least £20 a month to run but we need it for DCs homework etc.
Can anyone suggest a printer that doesn't cost a packet to run? Someone said Kodak, has anyone tried one out?

Agree, definitely find a printer where you can refill your own cartridges. We have HP ones, you just get a kit off ebay (big ones at work, but at home we have a HP Deskjet 5652, though don't know if its still made).

If you do a lot of printing though, you can wire your inkjet up to a continuous ink system - they cost a bit to buy but then you buy ink by the litre & it costs a fraction of a penny per sheet.

Laser printers - a bit cheaper to run if you're simply buying new out the box printer cartridges. But more expensive if you refill or use CIS with an inkjet. They also use massively more electricity than an inkjet.

If you do decide a laser printer is the way to go, you can also get toner refill kits for laser printer cartridges (one link here

Should say, more to the point with the CIS they are a lot less of a PITA than messing around with syringes etc to refill the cartridges with ink.

Obviously if you refill cartridges then its still only pennies for the ink.

Other trick we found with our printer is that you need to cycle through three cartridges to fool it into 'forgetting' that the cartridge is empty (so first refill & use cartridge A, then B, then C, then back to A - they only remember 3 at a time). There are different tricks for all the different makes/models of printer, but if you search on Google people have cracked most of them I think :)

Yes - printer ink must be one of the most expensive liquids on the planet. We should find out what country it comes from and then invade them.
