To wonder if Jan and Feb have ANY redeeming features?

Crap weather, ugly bare branches, no nice Christmassy feel in the air, everyone tired and coming down with something.

Can anyone tell me something positive about this time of year?

fantastic time to go on holiday in southern hemisphere Grin

liath · 27/01/2011 15:32

I'm really enjoying January this year for the first time in ages - I normally get SAD and feel like crap but seem to have got it sorted this year Grin.

MsSparkle · 27/01/2011 15:54

It is my ds birthday in jan so that is always nice. Valentine's day and pancake day! Although pancake day is march this year! Never known that before.

welshbyrd · 27/01/2011 16:20

Febuary - Valentines Day. Jeez, no old MNers romantics Smile

nancythenaughtyfairy · 27/01/2011 16:25

I don't mind them, spring is on the way and life is Sooo much calmer than in November and December.

Dancergirl · 27/01/2011 16:37

You can see the days starting to get longer again! Smile

TrillianAstra · 27/01/2011 16:38

The only redeeming feature of Feb is that it is short.

hairyfairylights · 27/01/2011 17:43

Januarys dedeeming feature is pay day
februarys is that march comes next

maighdlin · 27/01/2011 17:56

YANBU im only looking forward to DH's 30th birthday at the end of feb so i can give him the present i have been scrimping saving and planning for for months. normals years not that bothered.

newwave · 27/01/2011 18:05

Winter sun holidays, freezing when you get on the plane and wonderful bright sunshine at the other end.

Bonsoir · 27/01/2011 18:07

You should seize Jan and Feb to declutter, tidy up and clean your house and to do lots of DIY beauty treatments - there is little else profitable to do. Oh, and watch some good DVDs and read some nice novels on the sofa!

autumnsmum · 27/01/2011 18:08

I always used to hate these months but dd1 and ds are Jan and Feb birthdays so now Ilike them

SoMuchToBits · 27/01/2011 18:10

I think a lot of the problem for me is not just that Jan/Feb are cold and dark. It's that there is nothing to look forward to. No-one in our family has birthdays at that time of year, and most of my friends seem reluctant to arrange social events as they have had enough of them over Christmas, or have no money left for going out etc.

The one year I did enjoy January was when we went to South Africa - but that was before ds, when we had money, and didn't have to take term times etc into account! Can't afford to go that far afield now.

SoMuchToBits · 27/01/2011 18:11

The decluttering and tidying sounds like a good idea, but I just can't get motivated when it's so dark and gloomy. I always do mine in September!

Hellebore1 · 27/01/2011 20:55

The first snowdrops are the only things that keep me going during Jan and Feb SmileHellebore1

stressheaderic · 27/01/2011 21:00

January is just grim on toast.
I used to hate Feb too but my lovely daughter was born in Feb last year and I'm looking forward to her 1st birthday next month.

upahill · 27/01/2011 21:01

Loads of new albums get realsied in Febuary so the music scene bucks up a bit!

Arion · 27/01/2011 21:06

Love January, my birthday on Mon!

Giddyup · 27/01/2011 21:07

February will be great this year, We are going to Australia for almost all of it! Every other year it can piss up a rope though...

CatIsSleepy · 27/01/2011 21:10

january is appalling- cold dark and depressing-no positives that i can think of

feb is that bit closer to spring but still pretty bad. My birthday is at the end of it, and payday comes around quicker than most months, which redeems it slightly.

right now i just want to see the SUN damnit

Guadalupe · 27/01/2011 21:11

I like this time of year. There's no expectations to be having a good time and it's fine to laze about, have fires, read for hours, eat stew and cake and so on.

And its the end of all our our birthdays that are packed in over previous two months so more restful for me. No more birthdays until next November, hurray.

I quite like the bare branches, especially at the end of the day when they look spiky in the winter skies, in fact, I feel quite refreshed this time of year. Obv I am in the minority!

The thought of August makes me weary.

Guadalupe · 27/01/2011 21:12

I am the only one who wants to go for a walk at the weekend though, I have to drag them out moaning.

bb99 · 27/01/2011 21:15

My DC1's BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Smile

Guadalupe · 27/01/2011 21:19

Hmm, everyone who likes this time of year seems to because its their dc's birthday and I like it because they've finished. Grin

Maybe if they were spread out it would be better, but three in Nov alone, the cards go up and down, up and down.

onceamai · 27/01/2011 21:23

In Feb the days get longer and the month sometimes offers the first blue sky and sunshine. Also the bunches of daffodils in bud come into the shops and there is something very special and cheering about the first vase of unfurling sunshine.
