... to think this is not a suitable song for Asda to play

this is my first AIBU but I am wondering if I am being too sensitive by being cross at hearing 'Wives and Lovers' by Burt Bacharach playing on Asda FM presumably to shoppers all over the country.

The lyrics are so very sexist, I know it is an old song but I don't think it should be broadcast now.

Maybe I have misunderstood, maybe it is tongue in cheek?

flippinggorgeous Sex on fire was my ringtone for about 10 mins, I have a 5 and 3 year old, they still hum it when any phone rings Grin

I do remember my younger sister doing a wonderful version of "Like a Virgin" for extended relatives when it first came out!! Complete with dancing!!!

Stuff like this never usually bothers me; HOWEVER, even I raised my eyebrows at one of the songs we used to play in our shop:-

'Short People Round Here' - Randy Newman

Needless to say, it seems to have disappeared from our playlist .........

madamehooch · 27/01/2011 10:59

Sorry, the song is actually called 'Short People'.

COCKadoodledooo · 27/01/2011 11:16

I am alone in not paying the slightest bit of attention to whatever 'muzak' may be on in a shop? Couldn't even tell you if our supermarket has it or not!

Newgolddream · 27/01/2011 11:17

Lol at them playing Morrisey in Toys r us

kreecherlivesupstairs · 27/01/2011 11:19

I used to float around to Perry Como in Matrah Cold Stores like a 1950s housewife. Twas great.

Sidge · 27/01/2011 11:31

My girls love the Kings of Leon, and sing along in the car.

Luckily they think the song is 'My Socks are on Fire'.

And DD1 thinks Lady GaGa's Disco Stick is like a glowstick that you wave around when you're dancing Grin

Its crazy what some people put on the overhead speakers, I was at a soft play place similar name to Ape Work and they had Tenacious D playing Screw her gently Hmm

MackerelOfFact · 27/01/2011 11:44

PMSL at 'my socks are on fire'. Grin

Last summer, I took ds to a kids theme park in our town. Sat down for a drink and then realised they were playing Afroman - Because I got high... We left quite quickly

thereistheball · 27/01/2011 12:02

RudeEnglishLady and MmeLindt - was going to post a similar example - Lily Allen's Fuck You, heard in supermarkets throughout France. The only place I heard it where it could be considered appropriate was playing quietly in the gynaecologist's waiting room.

Nefret · 27/01/2011 12:08

I'm sure we don't have music in our Sainsbury's, or maybe I just never listen. Maybe I ought to shop in Asda, I like a bit of Burt Bacharach Wink

melodyangel · 27/01/2011 12:09

They used to play The Smiths - Meat is Murder in our local burger bar. Grin

bupcakesandcunting · 27/01/2011 12:28

Whilst the Rihannas of the world are pontificating over whether a bloke can "get it up" amongst others, I'll forgive a bit of Bacarach.
