no you are worried about having surgery which is 100% normal - but my friend has her second elective section this week and had a wonderful 'natural' section - I bet you anything it will go fine

I have only had emergency ones as well - try to focus on your lovely new baby x

TCOB · 26/01/2011 20:45

Oh Ledkr no wise words to offer but - bump - good luck for tomorrow, will be thinking of you, and sure everything will be well and you will have a 4th lovely DC this time tomorrow Smile

totally normal, i have had to be induced every time, and have been very nervous the night before. not the same, but similar fear.

electives are much safer than emergeancy c section and you will be in good hands.

good luck xxx and enjoy your new addition xx

ledkr · 26/01/2011 20:55

4mad yes never thought of that they would be safer wouldnt they.I ma more concerned as its the 4th and i know its more risky.

McGinger · 26/01/2011 20:58

I was TERRIFIED before my elective, having had an emergency section before under GA.

But, honestly, it was fine.

It was completely different to an emergency section.

Very calm, organised, not nearly as scary as I had made it out to be in my head.

The staff were fantastic, and if you explain your fears to them they will do all they can to help you.

Best of luck for tomorrow, just think 24hrs time you will be holding your brand new wee girl.

FabbyChic · 26/01/2011 20:59

Good luck for tomorrow!

4madboys · 26/01/2011 20:59

yes it being your 4th may make it more risky but it depends on all sorts of things like scar tissue etc, but during an elective they arent in a rush to get baby out and can take their time etc, it will be a much calmer procedure :)

you are bound to be nervous and we all worry about the worst happening, i know i did before my labours!

but just think, this time tomorrow you will be in bed snuggling your new baby! how fabulous xx

my dd is almost 8 wks old, i should change my name as i dont just have the four boys anymore! and believe me it will be amazing holding your new baby, i am relishing every moment with mine! focus on that :)

schmee · 26/01/2011 21:00

I've only had one elcs (twins) but I found it a really good calm experience - apparently completely different to an emergency one. Don't forget - if it's elective everyone is primed, ready and aware. And it's generally so much easier as surgery if they are operating on a muscle which isn't contracting.

Good luck - how exciting to be having your 4th!

Deciduousblonde · 26/01/2011 21:03

Best of luck for tomorrow :)

All will be well! I sat in on my friends elective c section (her previous had been an emergency) and I think I was more nervous than she was, as I have only ever had vaginal deliveries myself.

Anyhoo...it was the most wonderful experience I have ever had besides my own births. It was calm, the staff were reassuring and the surgeon lifted friends DS up in the air for us both to see...magical Grin

But of course you are being totally normal for being worried..take care & try to enjoy x

MissBeehiving · 26/01/2011 21:04

I was apprehensive before my ECS, but it was such a fantasic experience - calm and controlled, in comparison with my previous birth experience.Smile

As it's planned they'll be aware of your history and any complications, which is a really good thing.

You'll be fine - and you'll have your DD tommorrow!

I know what you mean, it's the planned part that I found odd and that one moment I was walking down to the labour ward, then theatre where I got myself up on the bed and they gave me the spinal.

I was worried the spinal wouldn't work and also about my previous -c-section scar but as others have said, it was so calm and I actually really enjoyed the whole expeirence. It was lovely not to feel completely exhausted once dd was delivered as I did for ds having had hours of labour before an emergency section.

Good luck and I look forward to hearing about your new baby.

jellybeans · 26/01/2011 21:09

I totally understand. I had my 3rd section 2 years ago and was scared all the way through the pregnancy. This was because I had had 2 stillbirths and also 2 previous emergency sections; one was a crash section and I had internal bleeding from a ruptured artery afterwards and lost over 3.5 litres and had to be re-operated on. I was in high dependency for 3 days and unable to see my DS who was in NICU in a poor condition. I was in 9 days and we both thankfully made it through. I am happy to say that my 3rd section, elective, went smoothly, no excess bleeding at all and it was actually every bit as wonderful as my 2 natural births. I was scared all the way though but the midwife was very good. I am sure you will be fine and lots of luck x

Honeybee79 · 26/01/2011 21:12

Totally normal to feel scared before surgery! I've only had one EMCS but told an elective is totally different - much more positive and calm. Have also been told that the recovery time is much shorter than for an EMCS.

Sure you'll be fine. Good luck and enjoy meeting your daughter! Smile

duchesse · 26/01/2011 21:17

My sister has had 4 CS. The first three were emergency ones (all for failure to progress- she never actually goes into labour but wanted to do trial of labour for the second and third). Fourth one she'd resigned herself to the inevitable and went for an elective CS. She said it was actually the best of the lot. Recovery time less than the previous ones. Apparently in Ireland they do way more than 3. 3 was the limit using the old vertical style incision which was far less stable.

Good luck OP. I'm convinced you will be fine.

GMajor7 · 26/01/2011 21:19

Aw, YANBU to be very apprehensive, but I'm sure it will be a very special day for you!

I had an emcs after a long labour but I was fairly tripped out by that point and didn't have time to worry about the impending surgery!

You'll be meeting your beautiful new baby very soon Smile

Limara · 26/01/2011 21:26

You'll be fine Smile

Alot of good advice on here, I hope it's reassured you especially about the muscle contracting-never thought of that did you?

You know where I am if you need me {{{{big hugs}}}}

faverolles · 26/01/2011 21:34

Ledkr - this time last week, I could have written your op.

I was absolutely terrified to be having a 4th cs.
The morning we went in, we had a chance to talk to the anaesthetist and the surgeon about it all. They were really reassuring, and if you don't mind a long post, I'll tell you what they told me!

The operation is trickier, but not necessarily riskier. The surgeon was confident enough to tell us that despite more scar tissue, it is still a routine operation, and that sometimes the scarring can help to prevent too much bleeding.
The anaesthetist explained that the first part of the op would take longer, as they would take their time to get to the baby. In our case, the previous cs's took about 5 mins to get the baby out. This time, it took 15 - 20 mins. After the baby was delivered, the op was normal from then on.
I was also told that recovery could take longer, due to the possibility of more scarring having to be removed. I've found this the easiest of the lot, and 6 days on, I feel almost back to normal.

The worst thing about this pregnancy was that so many people had words of doom for me about cs's. The midwife who was with me during the birth said that with a fourth, once you've got to the day of the operation, it's no more risky than a 2nd or 3rd section.

Sorry, all that seems quite jumbled up and probably doesn't make a lot of sense! But please don't worry, it'll be fine, and this time tomorrow you'll have a brand new baby snuggled up to you!

Good luck! Be thinking of you tomorrow (in a very non-MN way of course!)

ledkr · 26/01/2011 21:45
