After watching Gypsy wedding, channel four clearly doing 'ass shots' of Pre-pubescent girls. I don't agree with the way they were dressed or dancing (their parents have alot to explain) but it felt very gratuitous and very uncomfortable watching. Shots were you were not watching children dance you were watching a body art of a child dance. Grrrrrrr very cross about this.

It was an accurate depiction of customs within a community.

cosysocks · 25/01/2011 22:23

I'm not saying that it's the coverage of it that i'm disagreeing with.

I agree the close ups were totally unecsessary we could see they were dancing Hmm

bubblewrapped · 25/01/2011 22:27

The girls should not be dressed like that in the first place.. I agree, the camera shots were a bit Hmm

celebmum · 25/01/2011 22:30

i agree, we get that the little girls like to dress up and dance.. we saw it the first 15times it was shown..Hmm channel 4 could have high lighted different aspects of the traveling communities lives/traditions.

Shewhoshallnotbenamed · 25/01/2011 22:31

THis is not 'our' culture, it is theirs. It is a secretive culture, they do not normally let camera's film them.

Under normal circumstances, the girls would have been dressed like that/dancing like that in front of their female relatives - I didn't see any blokes sat around watching, it was their mums/nans/aunts.

The Gypsy community has very different social 'norms' than the typical UK community.

I'm not saying it's right, I certainly do not agree with a lot of it (esp the way the girls dress/act)

I'm just saying it's a different culture and who are 'we' to tell them the 'correct' way to live?

Shewhoshallnotbenamed · 25/01/2011 22:32

Sorry, meant to add - C4 should know better. YANBU in that aspect.

DirtyMartini · 25/01/2011 22:34

But surely the op of this thread is objecting to camerawork focussing on their arses, not trying to tell them how to live

CoronaAndLime · 25/01/2011 22:35

Yep the way it was shot is questionable.

yeah, sorry am ranting. Blush

cosysocks · 25/01/2011 22:36

Just to clarify this isn't about the travelling culture.
I feel channel 4 totally took advantage of the situation to show young girls dancing provocatively and using uneccessary and uncomfortable shots of them.

see above post, sorry. (am too chicken to actually kick that AIBU thread off on it's own though....!)

oldraver · 25/01/2011 23:56

Why should they 'not be dressed like that' ?

Atomant · 26/01/2011 00:29

Agree with OP was totally unnecessary.
On a slightly tangential note, think C4 have really missed an opportunity to show a relatively unknown culture within the UK in any depth (thus far).
