Right so theres this site called Little Gossip. Its been mentioned on Mumsnet before but hasn't recieved that much attention yet. Despite complaints and attempts to get under 16s off it is still up and running and still includes sixth forms and colleges. The basic purpose off the site is to post gossip about others in the same institution. This gossip does not have to be true, in fact Little gossip encourages users to make up gossip. Users can also rate gossip as being true or false and comment on gossip. Obviously this site is likely to have a horrible effect on young peoples self-esteem and be damaging to relationships and atmosphere in colleges etc.

What I propose is that you go on this website and post comments about why it is not good to gossip and how damaging this can be to young peoples self-esteem etc, as people of the world who have been through teenage years and know how tricky it can be.

Link please - what a stupid idea for a website

Meglet · 25/01/2011 21:42

I saw an article about this in the paper the other day. Shock Sad

MrsDeidreIppy · 25/01/2011 21:43

Also please tell me if this idea has any flaws, havn't really thought it through. And others ideas to get rid of this site?

OP posts:
cantspel · 25/01/2011 21:45

well your just giving it more publicity and unlikely to be able to get it taken down.

PaisleyLeaf · 25/01/2011 21:45

The only flaw I can think of is drawing attention to it.
But I think a few sincere messages, rather than a big MN campaign, is good.

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 25/01/2011 21:47

I think going to the site will only increase their hit rate and move them up google serches etc, this has been suggested by posters with very short posting history before.

[Hmm]

MrsDeidreIppy · 25/01/2011 21:49

This is true it will bring it more publicity. It seems like it had quite a lot of publicity a while ago and it looked like it might be shut down but has now been shoved under the carpet.

would rather sign up to a protest letter etc and send to administrators than actually post on the website itself - can you set this up at all ?

MrsDeidreIppy · 25/01/2011 22:43

If you go onto the site and scroll to the bottom you can click on to contact us and put in a complaint, put the subject as site feedback. It is also possible to request that an institution be removed but this request must come from the institution themselves. So I would suggestion contacting an institution particularly if it is an institution for under 18s and ask them to contact the site themselves.

Honestly, you may be better off contacting the hosts. In this case GoDaddy.com

They have the power to remove the site if it breaches their T&C. Here

Have just skim read but imagine that the website is breaking this rule;
Website must not include - "activities designed to defame, embarrass, harm, abuse, threaten, slander or harass third parties"

Katey1010 · 26/01/2011 02:00

Pleased to see my alma mater has very little, all of it relatively innocuous.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 26/01/2011 08:21

It is a really horrible site. Luckily DH and DD's school has no presence on it.

plupervert · 26/01/2011 10:03

Who is advertising on the site? Shall we contact them?!

Cheapskate · 26/01/2011 10:06

Sadly, I think it is already very well known by children at schools across the world. It certainly took off in the UK before Christmas. Very many schools had pages of nasty comments on there at that time, with children's full names given by those who left the gossip anonymously. CEOP and other equivalent organisations around the world are well aware of it. Since then schools have requested to have their pages removed.I think that many have been removed. However, as the previous posts say, sixth form colleges and indeed many schools which are called colleges and have children of 14 and up are still on there.
It is just as upsetting and damaging for students to be featured and gossiped about.
I would think it can't do any harm to write to one's local MP as this is something that is very difficult for individuals to act on.

Cheapskate · 26/01/2011 10:07

Incidentally, there is as yet no advertising on the site though surely the game plan for the creators must be to build up a business that can then be profitable.

plupervert · 26/01/2011 10:09

I've just sent them a filthy letter (well no swearing and no smut, but you know what I mean).

Cheapskate · 26/01/2011 16:08

Good idea plupervert.
I think that there is value in telling colleges that their institution is featured as many do not yet know. Others are well aware.

plupervert · 26/01/2011 16:41

They don't even make much sense. How gutting, to be dissed by people who are thick as pigshit! I know their being TAPS is a reason to despise and discount what they say, but - honestly - it is cruel. Not even kids who are over 18 have a mature and robust sense of self, and of self-worth. It is wrong to expose anyone to cruelty like this.

By the way, the institutions who have failed to remove themselves yet are are failing in their duty of care to their pupils/students.... though it's a shame they are put in this position by immoral and slanderous idiots.

Who are LittleGossip, anyway? They aren't listed at Companies House.

Cheapskate · 26/01/2011 20:55

I dont think that this site is based in Britain so I suppose it wont be on Companies House. Could be based anywhere in the world.Could be hosted in one country and yet the people who run it be in another.

I am not sure one can blame the institutions featured - they won't all know. And if they aren't obviously schools, who will inform them? Very tricky.
