to have just shouted "BISTO IS NOT PROPER GRAVY!" at the TV?

I may be a little on edge as I am watching last night's One Born Every Minute, and a touch emotional, but an advert just came on that made me shout.....

The new Bisto one, kids promising to behave in return for "one night a week to have a proper dinner with the family, with proper gravy".

It grates on me because once a week seems painfully few meals with the family (even if I'm not eating at the same time as my DD for some reason, I sit with her at the table for company). Also Bisto is not 'proper gravy' - call me a food snob but its granules, and (disclaimer - last time I checked) full of weird stuff. Its easier just to chuck the roasting juices in a pan with a little flour and some potato water/wine etc and simmer for a few mins.

I know some people don't enjoy cooking and I'm lucky that I do, and there is nothing wrong with using Bisto BUT its not 'proper' gravy., is it?

I may be a little irrational, I apologise in advance!

ad makes me laugh - cause BISTO is pretend gravy NOT proper gravy. Proper gravy is made with the juices etc, built by hand.

BISTO has it's place - DH loves it & I don't mind it occasionally, but it would never come near a roast dinner in my house and IT'S NOT PROPER GRAVY!!!

Deciduousblonde · 25/01/2011 14:26

I'm an OXO mum. My gravy is a stock cube or 3, mixed with meat juices & flour.

If I don't have meat juices, I don't have gravy. Unless I'm making onion gravy for my sausages Grin

BreastIntentions · 25/01/2011 14:28

It is like bumwee.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 25/01/2011 14:28

Trillian - you use leftover gravy from Sunday's roast or you make onion gravy (Nigella's red wine and cumin one is lovely - plus of course you get to finish the bottle) Grin

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 25/01/2011 14:28

Mind, I do use stock cubes.

SirBoobAlot · 25/01/2011 14:29

YADNBU.

FabbyChic · 25/01/2011 14:30

Bisto instant granules tast far better than the powdered shite.

GMajor7 · 25/01/2011 14:34

Agreed. 'tis not 'proper' gravy.

...but loads of it all over a huuuuge pile of mashed potato Smile yum!

rupert1 · 25/01/2011 16:45

I love cooking would never save meat juices, but always use bisto its just the thought of what it is puts me off

Horton · 25/01/2011 17:01

YANBU.

But the old-fashioned Bisto powder isn't bad at all. It's just onion powder, salt, caramel, yeast, potato starch and cornflour, none of which is weird as a gravy ingredient. And it does improve the flavour if you don't have nice stock or much meat juice.

tyler80 · 25/01/2011 17:49

To me Bisto is the onion gravy powder as that is always what we had growing up and as such is proper gravy as it's still made with the meat juices, just uses powder that is cornflour plus extras instead of flour on it's own.

Granules of any brand are not proper gravy

Bogeyface · 25/01/2011 17:53

It does the job, and aslong as it tastes ok who cares whether it is "proper" or not?!

Deaddei · 25/01/2011 18:02

Oh you can't beat a Fray Bentos pie, tinned tat ties, peas and thick Bisto.

manicbmc · 25/01/2011 18:06

How can they say it's proper gravy? It's foul and vile.

mummc2 · 25/01/2011 18:24

i may sound thick but how do you make 'proper' gravy? i use potato/veg water and meat juices if have any and add oxo and flour to thicken is this right

usualsuspect · 25/01/2011 18:25

I love bisto gravy granules ...makes my life easier

jenga079 · 25/01/2011 18:41

I think I just saw the same ad, but I was too busy thinking 'oooh, that child just ordered pizza... pizza sounds good' to even notice the bisto reference!

PatFig · 25/01/2011 20:10

I would not know.
