Really cross with Mothercare

They have my childs details stored and send age appropriate marketing emails, the usual.
My baby is 6.5 months and today I received :

*Your first car seat's served you well, but soon you'll need a new, weight-appropriate seat for the adventures still to come. Upgrade to a forward-facing car seat so your baby can sit up and watch the world go by. Our car seats make safety and comfort a priority.
Safe journey!
With love from mothercare x

It's almost time to upgrade to a new car seat suitable for your baby's age and size. From birth you'll have been charting your baby's weight and this is another time when knowing how much your baby weighs comes in handy - from 20lbs you can change to a forward-facing car seat.*

If safety was a priority then why are they encouraging parents to put their children in forward facing car seats a whole 5 months earlier than they need to ?

In Sweden they keep children rear facing until 4 years but even if you didn't want to do that the rear facing car seats that you buy for the newborns are suitable until 12 months or 13kg's certainly no need to go rushing out to buy a new car seat.

Have they broken any advertising laws I wonder ?

They can't have broken any advertising laws, I wouldn't have thought, as forward-facing car seats are not illegal. Confused

Can't you just delete the email?

mamatomany · 25/01/2011 11:56

I think it's wrong of them to be implying that it's more important that the baby has a view than it's safety.
It's not the seat I have a problem with it's the timing, too early and suggesting 20lb's is the weight limit for infant carriers when it's 28lb's.

But it not illegal its a choice. You choose not to use one others may choose to.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 25/01/2011 12:02

I think mothercare are BVU sending letters like that to 6 month old children.

bubblewrapped · 25/01/2011 12:02

what does their small print say after the "*"?

FoxyRevenger · 25/01/2011 12:02

Yes, but you can move up to a forward-facing at 20lbs. So they're not technically wrong.

I don't see the implication that a view is more important than safety.

pumperspumpkin · 25/01/2011 12:04

They are very clear saying "from 20lb you can change to?" not "from 20lb you need to change to? " (rightly, as that would be wrong). You might not like it but it's not illegal to put your baby into a forward-facing seat from 20lb and they are a business, they are trying to sell.

Anyway - I kept mine in their Group 0+ infant carriers as long as possible - which in DD's case was until she was 14 months (it's not an age-restriction on seats, it's a height and weight limit), and in DS's case until he was 8 months. Not every baby is regular-sized.

Itsapuppet · 25/01/2011 12:04

Kreecher :)

mamatomany · 25/01/2011 12:10

The headline of the email is "It's time to buy your next stage car seat: Your little one is growing up..."

No small print or disclaimers.

Oh and I did state today i received kreecherlivesupstairs the smart arse Hmm

OP posts:
bubblewrapped · 25/01/2011 12:12

you say the email says:

"from 20lbs you can change to a forward-facing car seat.*"

So usually the * means there is some sort of clause or additional info added to that, I just wondered what that was.

mamatomany · 25/01/2011 12:15

No the star is where I tried unsucessful to bold what mothercare had written, I've sent an email to customer services, which no doubt they'll delete.

OP posts:
TattyDevine · 25/01/2011 12:16

Thanks for the drip feed. Their headline could be viewed as bad if you chose to but seriously, just disregard it! You dont have to actually do it!

bubblewrapped · 25/01/2011 12:18

Ah ok.. lol.. I do that quite often when trying to make stuff bold too :)

pommedeterre · 25/01/2011 12:47

It's called selling and they're not stating anything wrong. Dd moved at 9 months as soon as she hit 20lbs as I couldn't stand the sight of her long legs halfway up the back seat anymore. looked uncomfortable.
Some babies will fit in the rear facing ones longer.
If you don't want to move yet then don't flipping move. And get a hobby.

southmum · 25/01/2011 12:53

yabu - nothing wrong with that email.

Just delete it and worry about something else.
