to think that British driving law needs a revamp

My DH failed his test today. He has already passed it once but didnt send off for the paperwork as he decided he was never going to drive again. Now we have DC, this has changed.

He failed on one fault, being in the wrong lane on a roundabout, a stupid roundabout that has recently had the lanes changed. There was noone else around. He has been told he doesnt need any more lessons, just to resit the test at a cost of another £60.

His brother was banned last January for drink driving. He got his licence back in December, no questions asked.

AIBU to think this logic is a bit squewiff?

This is an issue close to my heart - I passed four years ago on the fourth attempt [bblush]. Each time it was because of a maneuver -and you know what, I've never had to reverse round a corner since (while my reverse parking has improved immeasurably)! And yet every day I see people fail to indicate, cut other people up or park really badly - I bet they didn't do that during their test, and neither would they do that during a retest. The test isn't a good measure of your driving skill so retesting people would be pointless. I'm with the OP - there needs to be tougher sanctions on drivers who break the rules of the road.

crystal my instructor told me that as long as your observation is good , you can mess up on maneuvers and still pass. Maneuvers are really about control of the car and looking to see if anyone is about to crash into you you into them!) I messed up big time on reversing round a corner but made a big point of observation and didn't even get a minor.

Driving DOES change after you pass your test, but you do have to be at a certain level to begin with, otherwise what's the point of being tested?

There are loads of people who can't reverse out of a parking area, will not enter a roadabout until it is clear, will not pass a parked car when there is an oncoming car even though a bus in front of them managed it.

These are issues of competence and although a test is not a perfect measure it is good enough in view

HOw many people who passed their drivers licence 20 years ago have looked at a new copy of the high way code

many people do not know their road signs

My employer recently forced me to take a refresher course and I was surprised what I forgotten

So because your dh was first too lazy/just not bothered to send off the paper-work and then was in the wrong lane at a roundabout (probably one of the most annoying traits of any drivers) the law needs a revamp?

GrimmaTheNome · 25/01/2011 13:45

Definitely agree that if you lose your licence you should retake

Yes - it might help deter idiots from drinking/speeding, and get dangerously incompetent drivers off the road. Also at present some people get off a driving ban if they 'need' their car - well, maybe that could be still allowed but only if they too can pass the test.

I failed 7 times Blush before finally passing.

I don't think I'd have the strength or the money to go through it all again.
