To ask a question about tax credits?

Hi I know this isn't the right place to post this but some posters may know the answer to my question as the tax credits helpline is too busy to answer my call and keeps hanging up on me Hmm.

Am getting a lodger under the government "Rent a Room" scheme not earning over the set amount. Am single working parent in receipt of tax credits and lodger wants to go on my council tax bill meaning I will no longer be eligible for my single persons discount.

Am I allowed to do this without it affecting my tax credits?

Thanks.

not sure what the question is, but council tax discount will not affect your tax credits, but income from a lodger will?

Found this
It seems anything over the £4000 ish pounds will affect it.

A quick google says it wont affect your TC if your income from it is below the tax free threshold (£4250 iirc), but you are best off checking.

But if you have another person living there then surely they must be on your council tax bill or it will be fraud and if you are caught out then it could cause you alot of problems.

Google is your friend here, give it a try!

What's the question? The council tax single person rate having an effect on tax credits? Confused

twinkletweeter · 24/01/2011 18:34

I know the lodger won't affect ne tax credits as he us paying v low rent, just wasn't sure about the whole council tax thing :s

You definitely have to pay council tax for him.

Rather, you wont get the single person discount you're getting so it will be at full price.

twinkletweeter · 24/01/2011 18:43

That's fine that I lose the single person discount, I just panicked about my tax credits!!

Thanks!

Yes you will have to pay the extra Council Tax ....no you it wont affect your Tax Credits. Just phone them and they will hopefully sort it pronto, mine didnt it took them over a month so to redo the payments.

jellyjelly · 24/01/2011 20:43

I believe you dont even need to declare it if you claim tax credits but if it goes over the amount set per year before you have to declare then you do.

porcamiseria · 24/01/2011 21:32

just factor into the income you declare and they do the maths
