or should shop dummies not be given visible rib cages

or hugely prominent collar bones and hip bones - all the signs of a very low bmi. OK, they are going to make them thin, because thin sells clothes at the moment. But to actually cast in these bones... its hideous to me. Who agrees?

TheMonster · 24/01/2011 16:27

I agree.

FrostyTits · 24/01/2011 16:37

I think you need to get a life. No one is going to want to buy clothes from a dummy that's size 16. If you don't like the look of the dummies, then shop elsewhere or online.

southmum · 24/01/2011 16:38

Hahaha.

Biscuit

Agree with Frosty - get a life.

bronze · 24/01/2011 16:40

I agree op
You can do thin without needing to go that far

I say this as someone who used to naturally have prominent bones

katiestar · 24/01/2011 16:49

Seeing ribs is definitely not an indication of being underweight.Doctor told me that if yiou can't see the ribs you are fat.

deliakate · 24/01/2011 16:51

Well I can still see mine and I'm not pregnant, so on its own that's true. I just don't think the combination of all the protruding bones is that great an image to project. And also, they are dummies, they don't have bones.....

OP posts:
deliakate · 24/01/2011 16:51

Sorry, I AM pregnant!

ChinaCup · 24/01/2011 17:24

The thing with the shop dummies is that they have tiny size 8 waists and hips with generous (though still pert) E-cup breasts, which is just not representative of most women. I know this because I checked the labels on a dummy in M and S a few months ago when I was feeling bored and nosy!

ramonaquimby · 24/01/2011 17:29

My ribs collarbones and hips are all clearly visible and I have v healthy bmi, not underweight at all

MillyR · 24/01/2011 17:31

My bones are visible, particularly my collar bones, and I am at the top of the healthy range for BMI.

deliakate · 24/01/2011 17:32

They are certainly not representative of most women's bodies, ChinaC, but its like giving a barbie doll ribs. And some ppl undoubtedly do have visible bones whilst not being underweight. But come on. They are plastic. They don't have skeletons afaik....

OP posts:
curlymama · 24/01/2011 17:33

I am within a healty BMI and my collarbones and ribs are visible.

When my ribs aren't visible, i make the effort to lose a little weight because I know it's because I have over indulged and my clothes are tight.

crazygracieuk · 24/01/2011 17:45

I'm with frosty tits. Healthy women do have the odd protuding bone.

Clothes wouldn't look good on a cellulite ridden overweight mannequin with blotchy skin.
Manequiis are based on professional models. I saw a documentary about the Paris couture houses who used real supermodels and the popular ones were the really tall 80s models . Kate Moss was considered far too short to be a model of designer store.

ISNT · 24/01/2011 17:46

These thread always end up with people taking personal offence.

The OP isn't saying it's horrid to be a person whose collarbones show etc.

She's saying it's horrid that many shop dummies now are deliberately cast with a lot of bones sticking out. While it is perfectly possible to have bones which show and be healthy, it is also the case that a person who is too thin will have their bones sticking out. In a society where an unhealthily thin frame is revered to the point of fetishisation, I think it's valid to note that shop dummies have changed to reflect this as well.

GetOrfMoiLand · 24/01/2011 17:47

Oh don't be silly.

You can see my ribs, my collar bones are very prominent and my hips stick out like Indian cattle, but I am not too thin.

ISNT · 24/01/2011 17:48

"Clothes wouldn't look good on a cellulite ridden overweight mannequin with blotchy skin."

But presumably they looked fine on the dummies that they had 5 or 10 years ago which didn't include sticking out bones. The dummies have been changed to reflect a fashion - being thin enough to have your bones stick out - whether that is healthy for any particular person or not.

Tortington · 24/01/2011 17:49

seeing ribs is ok

hephaestus · 24/01/2011 17:56

As has been pointed out visible ribs, collarbones and hip bones are not solely the preserve of the drastically underweight. You are meant to be able to see your ribs.

ThePosieParker · 24/01/2011 17:59

Seeing ribs is one thing, seeing every dip in ribs is not okay fro most. The only time you could clearly see my ribs you could also see how I kept my bikini line if I lay on a beach in bikini, I was under six stone.

kepler10b · 24/01/2011 18:02

ribcages collar bones etc should be visible. if they are not you are overweight.

i think all this stuff about women being pressured to be overweight is over done tbh. there is a bigger problem with obesity than anorexia in this country.

kepler10b · 24/01/2011 18:02

obviously i meant pressured to be underweight

coco2901 · 24/01/2011 18:04

It was well known at one point that if Topshop dummies were real women with their measurements their BMI would be so low that it would have been almost impossible for them to have periods.

Meglet · 24/01/2011 18:16

I have visible ribs, collar bones etc and am quite thin. But YANBU the clothes dummies are way too thin.

I was flicking through my old vogues the other day and the proper supermodels (linda, naomi etc) are such a better shape and size than the skinny ones you get these days. They are decent size 10's, not the 0's and 2's you get these days.

cheekyseamonkey · 24/01/2011 18:43

YANBU - a lot of people on this thread are however. I see no need for them to have nipples or toes either (unless they are to wear toe post shoes - sidetracked). No need for ribs, bones or any such protrusion. Do the male manequins have bulging crotches? If not, why not. This is surely something all young men should aspire to?

hephaestus · 24/01/2011 18:56

"Do the male manequins have bulging crotches?"

They do have crotch bulges, yes. As do real men. Shock Grin
