If you are going to smoke

AIBU to think that if you do smoke, the least you could do is to step outside the car and do it when you have a toddler and young baby inside. I was at the supermarket and saw 2 people parked in the disabled bay (no disabled badge, but that's a whole other thread!) light up with a young baby and a toddler in the car.

I know it's hard to stop smoking (believe me, I have had personal experience), but how hard is it to step outside the car to have your fag FGS. They were parked, it's not as if they were even driving! Surely, EVERYONE knows by now how harmful smoking is, especially to children.

Done to death this topic may be, but this flagrant disregard for the kids in that car where there was NO reasonable excuse for smoking inside left me gobsmacked..

I'm still a smoker and I agree with you. I wouldn't even light up in a car with a non-smoking adult never mind a child!

YADNBU. Vile.

I saw a pg woman smoking in her car with two preschool DC's while she waited for her older kids to come out of school Sad.

My niece smokes around her DD, as does her partner and mother. I suppose if you are not considering stopping at all (my niece says she enjoys it and will not stop) then you are ignoring the risks to yourself, and it is only a small step to take to ignoring the risks to anyone else.

YANBU.

OmniaParatus - I think that's a bit of a leap to say that if you are ignoring the risks to yourself it's only a small step to ignoring the risks to anyone else. I say this as an ex-smoker.

Smoking in a confined space with any non-smoker = very bad.

Quick fag of an evening when the kids are in bed = not great but not the end of the world.

I find smokers have weird justifications for these things. I know a woman who decided to ban smoking from her house when she got pregnant, so she would smoke outside, obviously taking unborn DC with her. I mean, she's acknowledging that a smoky atmosphere will be bad for her DC but not giving up whilst said DC has to live in her Hmm

Ah Mishy

Reminds me of the thread I started about women who smoke when preg or around their dc's...

Totally wrong it is - yanbu at all

clevercloggs · 23/01/2011 18:26

lets face it, smokers will do anything for their fixes, regardless

UnseenAcademicalMum · 23/01/2011 18:27

I used to be a smoker (pre-dc), but find it awful when people smoke around children at all.

I can understand that it's hard to give up (I know), but there's really no justification for smoking around children. They should at least have got out of the car whilst having a fag.

TheMonster · 23/01/2011 18:30

Jessica, that's so true! I know smokers who have tried to justify their actions too, like smoking outside, then coming straight back in, reeking of smoke, to breastfeed/cuddle the baby, thereby having the baby clasped to their smoke-ridden clothes.

giveitago · 23/01/2011 18:32

I keep saying this but I do think it's illegal to smoke in a car with child in it - isn't it?

I'm a smoker and regardless of the law (I'm sure it's illegal to smoke with a dc in the car - and it's a fairly new law) I never light up near ds regardless.

It's wrong to smoke (I do know) but it's pretty fucking shit to smoke near a child and certainly not in a confined space.

I saw this the other day - was staying at my mum's and took ds to a play centre place - huge place with lots of parking. A lady came screaching up in her car - 3 dcs and no child seats or seat belts and they were hanging out of the windows. I reckon they were hanging out of the windows to get away from the smoke.

I think it's illegal? Am I right?

Giddyup · 23/01/2011 18:34

I saw a woman passenger on the M25 who was hanging out the back window to smoke to protect the kids in the car. The only thing was the totally unrestrained toddler was also hanging out the window.....

TheMonster · 23/01/2011 18:35

I don't know, giveitago, but it should be.

LookToWindward · 23/01/2011 19:03

"I think it's illegal? Am I right?"

Nope. There's been talk of it for a while but I doubt it will get anywhere (at least for a while yet).

Personally I think smoking whilst driving is quite a silly thing to do full stop.

giveitago · 23/01/2011 19:31

Oh - I really thought it was fairly new legislation. I've been telling everyone about it (duurr). Oh but it should be I think.

But common sense does tell you not to do things that put's your kids at risk.Common sense also tells you that when driving the only thing in your hand should be steering wheel.

I never smoked whilst driving even prior kids. Just not great driving in my opinion.

I'll get off my high horse then as this woman wasn't doing anything illegal but god her very young kids were hanging out the windows.
