I'm just looking on the ThomsonAlfresco website for a summer holiday.

I said to my dh what fantastic prices these are to Italy for a week - considering they include ferry travel. He was surprised at ferry travel to Italy.

So it was at this point I read the small print - it's a ferry to Calais or Dunkirk, according to their chart there is then mileage of 740 - 1245 miles to their Italian campsites.

Who would do this - AIBU to think this is mad, and certainly makes ryanair look like they use local airports!!!

In answer to the question of where I thought ferry would go to - I thought it would go round to Italy!

I told you my geography was useless - and I actually said to DH who did laugh, but I thought it'd be like a slumming it cruise, round to Italy - he said nice try for that price!!!

Complete change we are now flying and going to Furterventura (I will learn to spell it before we go :) )

Lostinwales, I haven't stayed up that end - well not the Italian side anyhow. Visits to Menton/Monaco/Villefranche should be doable. I heard there is fab market in Ventimiglia. Heading in the other direction, there is a big water park at Ceriale, and the old walled town in Albenga is worth a visit. Portofino is obviously lovely Wink - though drive to Rapallo or Ste Margherita Ligure and get the boat. Take a packed lunch - it is pricey!

And the Cinque Terre villages are gorgeous if you can get that far the coast. Again, leave the car in Deiva or one of the neighbouring towns and get the train. You can walk between them, but there is a stetch called the Via dell'Amore which is more than feasible to do even with little kids. The scenery is stunning.
