To wish people would stop'accusing' other posters of being men?

I have read two threads today where the OP was suspected of trollery. Both had replies of "I bet OP is a man".

I really dislike the assumption that someone without boobs and a vag would be more prone to this behaviour. I also find the idea that being female alone would make trolling less likely. I also don't think that being male is a 'bad' thing and find it a bit of a strange insult.

I think it's downright sexist, to be honest.

AIBU? And if I am, please do explain why.

I haven't personally seen any of those threads but YANBU.

Fitzwilliam · 23/01/2011 11:33

Plenty of our 'big' trolls have been women.

I think the sort of accusation to which you refer is not a condemning of a whole gender or an assumption that men are more likely to troll, but a suspicion that somebody is pretending to be something they're not. The accusation isn't that they're a man, it's that they're pretending to be a woman. Vair different.

HeathcliffMoorland · 23/01/2011 11:33

I'm genuinely not trying to be inflammatory.

I just don't agree with the idea that lack of a second X chromosome would make someone more prone to an idea!

Makes sense, Fitzy!

You are a man though aren't you? Or are you?

I think you are because of your "name" and because you called Fitzwilliam "Fitzy" which is a blokey thing to do. Either that or you are an Australian...

HeathcliffMoorland · 23/01/2011 11:38

Tatty, I am Irish...

And my lack of willy would make me a strange man indeed. Grin

I often think of OPs "I bet she's a woman". And I'm usually right. As ever.

sevendwarves · 23/01/2011 11:39

It's probably a ridiculous question but what makes you guess someone is a troll? Can anyone give me an example?

I don't know if I've ever witnessed a troll, unless I'm just really naive?!

hairyfairylights · 23/01/2011 11:45

Yanbu. I've seen it and I've had it done to me

Trolls come in very many shapes and sizes. Some are purely messing about for a laugh (they're obvious, see any thread entitled 'my dh has a very odd sexual fetish involving spatulas' for example), there are people who crave attention and invent bizarre situations, damaging emotionally vampyric trolls who prey on the experiences of others.

I like a troll that does this....

Oh God, I've had sex and forgot to use a condom.

A few hours later...

I'm pregnant, omg omg omg

A week later...

It's quintuplets

An hour later...

And a monkey

A minute later...

And the roof's just blown off my house

30 seconds later....

omg omg omg omg

A day later...

I've given birth, it was 3 minutes ago to premature quintuplets and a marmoset but I'm back to tell you about it.

They're just deliciously crap.

Or these trolls...

I've got some genuine concerns about my vulva. Can you post pictures of yours to compare?

Pan · 23/01/2011 11:49

"after all, if i went on dadsnet and put 'why are fucking men so lazy and useless?' i would expect a grilling of some description, wouldn't you? "

tbh Frosty, I hope you would be tastefully ignored.Smile.

Besides which it will have dropped off your 'threads I'm on' before anyone noticed it!

Truckulente · 23/01/2011 11:51

'I've got some genuine concerns about my vulva. Can you post pictures of yours to compare?'

I've a Ford Focus I'm a bit concerned about, never had a vulva.

I do think that there are some men who feel the need to come on and tell us that we have got things wrong about certain women's issues. Often these men do not reveal their sex straight away (they don't need to - it is blindingly obvious).

These types of men who come on to set the laydeez straight are very tedious.

Thankfully there are some great male posters to reset the balance.

HeathcliffMoorland · 23/01/2011 12:09

"I do think that there are some men who feel the need to come on and tell us that we have got things wrong about certain women's issues."

That is true. But some women do this too.

I just don't see it as adequate grounds for guessing someone's gender... Particularly if one is used in a derogatory sense.

There are certain sites that pop over to hassle MN whose posters are universally male. The general, "I don't believe you! In fact, I don't think you're even a laydee!" reaction to possible trolls has become a bit silly though.

Anyway, my nipples are doing odd things. Do your nipples ever do odd things?

FabbyChic · 23/01/2011 12:11

I think women are more likely to troll than men, after all us women have more issues.
