to think that eventually somewhere a teacher will say "I am NOT calling your child that every day"

I am thinking of names like "joop!" [sic]

How on earth are teachers/other adults who have to deal with children every day supposed to go along with these ridiculous names without cracking up or dying of embarrassment?

Spare a thought for the reception teacher when you name your child "Weston-Super-Mare" or whatever!

2 of my DS's names are unusual in the UK (well they all are but DS2's is never really shortened to anything).

I have inadvertently ended up with a child that is known by initials (as in AJ, CJ, type thing) and another that goes by (and prefers right now) a nickname that sounds like a Welshman.....

juneybean · 22/01/2011 19:53

I'd rather have a joop other than a Jack D, Jack P, Jake R, Jake M, Jay all in the same day.

whatdoiknowanyway · 22/01/2011 19:53

What's wrong with Joop - it's a dutch name. I've worked with people called Joop.

UnquietDad · 22/01/2011 19:54

What's with the sudden rise of Bailey? The last school I worked in had four Baileys in one Y5 class.

mummylouise · 22/01/2011 20:01

my dd is erin-chloe which i always thought sset her apart from the other erin's in her school

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 22/01/2011 20:02

oh yes - we have lots of NAME A,B,C at the DS's schools.

It's never just "ella" - it's Ella so and so.

BunnyWunny · 22/01/2011 20:02

A name is there to be judged. You can't call a child something silly and expect everyone to like it.

When the child is young it will be a reflection of the parents and people will judge them, like it or not. Unfortunately the poor person will still be stuck with the name when their parents are dead and gone.

If I had a stupid name i think I would change it if it bothered me.

DrSeuss · 22/01/2011 20:09

Remember the girl from NZ, Tallulahdoesthehulainhawaii? Poor little bugger. She sued her parents to have her name changed. What did her teachers make of that?

NinkyNonker · 22/01/2011 20:15

I taught a pupil called Channel. She thought it was Chanel...

supersewer · 22/01/2011 20:16

I know of a Nike (pronounced Nikey) not sure if younger brother is called reebok but I'm sure it is a possibility!!!

NinkyNonker · 22/01/2011 20:16

I would never show any opinion either way, but I am only human and may laugh inside. (Obviously we called Channel Chanel.)

Woodlands · 22/01/2011 20:18

Well, I was at school with Fifi Trixibelle Geldof for a while (she was in first form when I was in sixth form) and I can say people commented rather more on her being Bob Geldof's daughter than on her name...

mumbar · 22/01/2011 20:24

Yes Baroque!! and btw the way it wasn't me back then but they are right. Wink Grin

Believe it or not in my DS school there are 3 of them spelt that way!! Only his is because of Spanish family but I do know its the Welsh spelling too. Smile

redhappy · 22/01/2011 20:33

btw Amani (pronounced the same way as Armani) is quite a common african name (I think! I know a few anyway).

DanJARMouse · 22/01/2011 20:36

Since moving to scotland, i havent come across any weird names!

I do get annoyed that DD2 writes her name as Rebecca M now though! In P1 there are 2 Rebeccas and 2 Kiras, would have made sense to put 1 of each in each class, but no, 2 Rebeccas in one class and 2 Kiras in the other!

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 22/01/2011 20:36

I know of a 'fooker'

I shit you not !

Goblinchild · 22/01/2011 20:37

Why would a teacher make fun of a child with a weird name, or be unkind about it. The child has enough on their plate already.
There was a previous thread on this subject, my contribution was:

" YABU it makes calling the register so much more interesting.
I've had a Cheyenne, Magenta, Merlin, Cloudwalker, Storm, Animal, Noman, Dreamchild, Diamond, Star, Charlie (Charlemagne) Gabriel and Galahad."

nulgirl · 22/01/2011 20:45

Ninkynonker are you on Glasgow? When we were registering my ds the lady in the registrars office told us about the channel/ Chanel girl. Wasn't sure if she was having us on or not.

ditzymare · 22/01/2011 20:51

I'm a bit shocked to hear that some people would make judgements about the type of family a child came from based on their name.

My dd2 has a very unusual name spelt in a way that is considored "chavvy" by many. My dd1 and ds have very traditional names. DD2 was adopted at 2.6 years. Her name was the only link she had with her birth mother so we didn't change it. So many people comment on her name and no one can ever spell it. I feel really sad that she could be judged in life because of it.

namechange1111 · 22/01/2011 20:51

test

namechange1111 · 22/01/2011 20:52

I know of a Shicaine.

She has a brother named Beelee. No, not Bailey. Beelee.

hockeyforjockeys · 22/01/2011 22:09

A friend's mother, who is a nursery teacher, once strongly recommended to some parents that they find an alternative name for their child to use in school, and pointed out to them what would probably happen to a child called Piglet.

MsKLo · 22/01/2011 22:47

I am very curious as to what your name is altinkum!

Yep I know a few amani's too and a few shylow's and and a kalayla and a shaniqua
