to wonder what cuts YOU would make?

I keep reading threads about how a, b or c should not, under any circumstances have their funding cut. So, given that cuts have to be made because of ongoing overspending in recent decades, what would you, personally, choose to take the money away from?

OP posts:
Serendippy · 22/01/2011 20:03

Haven't read the whole thread (yes, I know how annoying that is and that what I'm about to say may have been said before, in which case disregard it)

Some people have said that cutting out the middle man is the way forward. How does that sit with the scrapping of the PCT and giving GPs control over budgets? Because from what I've heard, people are not keen on that idea either.

OP, I think you are right in pinpointing that people are going to be unhappy no matter what happens.

StataLover · 22/01/2011 20:10

givemesleepandabitofhope

It was the DM that made me think overseas aid would be the first one. Blush.

I have a lot more respect for Cameron when he DIDN'T cut the budget and even increased it - it was an easy target and he really doesn't have much to gain politically by doing that.

"I would raise taxes and make tax avoidance a criminal offence. "

So where would that leave ISAs?

MainlyMaynie · 22/01/2011 20:30

"I would raise taxes and make tax avoidance a criminal offence. "

So where would that leave ISAs?

Illegal :o. Though there is a difference between allowing tax avoidance and actively using the tax system to promote certain types of behaviour. One of the behaviours you might want to use it to promote is saving.

crumpet · 22/01/2011 20:33

Switzerland still has national service - not cheap

Pixel · 22/01/2011 20:41

If we stopped paying untold billions to the EU I guess we could pay for everything else and be allowed to keep 'proper' non-mercury light bulbs!Smile

tinkgirl · 22/01/2011 20:53

sorry but the politicians would have to go on nat min wage. How long do you think it would be before they went on strike?

It's about the only job you can do and get paid at that level without having ANY formal qualifications.

Banks should be made to pay the money back that we have bailed them ouot with out of their profits.

ALL services for children, elderly, disabled should be protected even those which are now privatised.

BigGitDad · 22/01/2011 21:32

I would reduce parliament and it's number of MP's. Introduce a flat salary. No benefits and hotels for them to stay at in London if they stay away from home.
I would reform the tax system so it would be on a gradual process as opposed to three tax bands of 20, 40 and 50 per cent.
I would change all Local and Central Govt pension schemes away from Final Salary schemes to money purchase schemes.
There would also be a windfall tax on the banks which would be related to the bonuses that have been paid.
That is to start with anyway.

lifeinlimbo · 22/01/2011 21:45

I would cut 'Dave' Cam first. Put all MPs on minimum wage, we might be able to fund their transport costs, but only if they appeal. twice. Now we're all in it together! Just think of the banks, dave!

Our system actively discourages saving - interest rates are being kept artificially low, mortgages are at their cheapest ever, inflation means money is actually losing value so better to spend spend spend! (but VAT is discouraging spending so ???)

kerstina · 22/01/2011 21:48

Not so much cuts but stopping all the loopholes that mean billions are lost in tax. Yes am talking about the likes of Philip Green and other companies that are off shore avoiding tax. Not sure about this but my dad said even the bookies are doing this !
Tax people who can afford second homes more.
The Royal family sell of their land not our forests !
No more illegal wars or any more war mongering for that matter.
Have a one off national pay of our debt day encouring anyone who has lots of spare cash to donate so that our children will have a better and brighter future Smile

Abr1de · 22/01/2011 21:50

'Anyone who has been to Poland, Hungry or any otther former Eastern block country that has recently joined the EU will know every where you look there are roads, airports, railway stations being built using EU funding'

Sounds like Ireland twenty or twenty-five years ago.

Tortington · 22/01/2011 21:52

i don't think cuts have to be made - i think its all bollocks.

kerstina · 22/01/2011 21:57

Yes exactly Custardo these cuts are a disaster for the ordinary people of these country. The very rich do not seem to be making any sacrifice.

lifeinlimbo · 22/01/2011 21:59

true custardo, its a tory ideological dream. Thats why everyone here has voted for MP wages to be cut to minimum wage.

Right, thats sorted then. Who's going to tell Dave?

pinkteddy · 22/01/2011 22:02

Fabby chic I worked in the NHS for 10 years and I never knew anyone with a company car, even the Chief Exec. If you compare the NHS to the private sector its actually undermanaged. Councils on the other hand........

lifeinlimbo · 22/01/2011 22:02

The royal family have had their income increased. Shock but then, isnt 'dave' related to the queen?

We have lots of equity in the banks which dave's mates we should be making a profit on, so really there is no need to make these cuts, its a load of shite tory PR.

MillyR · 22/01/2011 22:07

I would cut the military budget and trident. I would also reduce the budget of drugs services; I think the service is worthwhile to have, but it is hugely overfunded and inefficient.

Abr1de · 22/01/2011 22:08

So we're at war and you'd trim the military budget? I'd like to see you justify that to the mother of a soldier in Afghanistan who's worried that her 19-year-old hasn't got the equipment he needs.

MillyR · 22/01/2011 22:11

We should pull out of the war in Afghanistan. The fact that people don't have the equipment they need is all the more reason to leave.

GreenAmy · 22/01/2011 22:13

"I don't think overseas aid should be cut, but am a bit"

See link

Aid is increased to Iraq a country with huge oil reserves.

Then there is Africa were much of the aid disappears into corrupt systems

ivykaty44 · 22/01/2011 22:13

morning meets that end in a free lunch - everyone knows that they will need lucnh - buy it or bring pack-up for a morning meeting. better if lunch was not free for all days meetings but i will hold fire ont hat Grin

skype - the police can't hack it so whilst councils use BT and the like -running up phone bills at high cost business rates - they could be using skype for free or small cost as if every council is spending £10k per month on phone bills then this would save money

heating controlled at room and not at source - this is a hugh bug bear

get rid of top people in councils and let the 6 or 7 people under that person run the council together - this would save the country 433 local government wage bills of at least £100000 so 433000000

cantspel · 22/01/2011 22:14

I would cut all these heads of city councils like manchesters labour run council's chief executive earns nearly £100,000 more than the prime minister.

cantspel · 22/01/2011 22:17

I would also change the rules so that if you are in receipt of disablity living allowance you cannot claim carers allowance for caring for someone else.

ivykaty44 · 22/01/2011 22:19

so if your blind and care for your old mum why would you penalise the blind person?

GreenAmy · 22/01/2011 22:21

I have another one

Switch off traffic lights at night, not a huge saving but I bet it would save a few million and it be green too
