to dislike being greeted as 'lady'?

There is a lovely candle shop in town near me, and I went in there today, only to find it had been taken over.
The new owner was standing at the door, and as I walked in, he greeted me with 'hello lady'. I was quite shocked as it sounded awful, and he did the same to another lady as she entered too.

How odd. I think the candle shop is a cover for something illegal out the back hence his lack of knowledge about 'ladies' and 'manufacturers'. Normally I find 'hello lady' is accompanied by leering looks, salivating and palms rubbing thighs of trousers rapidly. My advise is buy your candles elsewhere.

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 22/01/2011 17:36

i have never heard anyone address someone like this. i would have found it odd.

'hello' on it's own would have been perfect.

TheMonster · 22/01/2011 17:36

Rainbow is lovely! I wouldn't have minded that at all!

It was the only shop nearby that sold a particular brand of insense that I like, but they had none there today anyway and I think I shall buy it online from now on.

FranSan, that's what it felt like! I love the description!

Boo, exactly.

Did he look like Benny Hill? I am imagining the music now with you and the other lady running around the shop and him chasing you Grin. The music is going to be in my head all night now, [groan].

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 22/01/2011 17:39

actually thinking about it now, hello would have been odd where i am from. you either get,
"how's it going?" or "whatabout ye?" Grin

PatPending · 22/01/2011 17:42

Was it "Heellooooo Lady" - bit like Lesley Phillips?

Yuck!

RevoltingPeasant · 22/01/2011 17:51

Hmm, this might be a cultural thing, but I grew up in the US, and there, I think, 'lady' is def rude.

To my ear, it has the familiarity of 'love' without the friendliness. I agree with Bathsheba: 'lady' is only used in phrases like 'Thanks a lot, lady!' (sarcastic) or 'Hey lady, [insert expletive of choice].'

You know what? Don't go back. He sounds weird anyhow.

TheMonster · 22/01/2011 17:53

The more I think about it, the more I don't want to be in the shop ever again in case he locks me in. Shock

It's definitely used in a sort of scolding way up here in Scotland unless it's an actual title or just as a noun.

E.g. - "Less of the cheek Lady" would have been something my parents would have said to me.

longgrasswhispers · 22/01/2011 17:57

This is an odd one. You see, we wouldn't mind if we all went in there and he said "hello ladies", now would we?

deemented · 22/01/2011 17:59

You could always say 'Hello, Manshape'

RevoltingPeasant · 22/01/2011 18:02

Good point, longgrass.

Still, stuff like this isn't logical... A lot of older people (IMO) find referring to a female as 'a woman' to be rude. My sister got told off for this once! As in, 'that woman just said blah blah...'.

I just cannot separate 'lady' from 'hey' in a rough Bronx accent Grin

mutznutz · 22/01/2011 18:11

I was just about to post YANBU

But that's because I read the title as to dislike being greeted as 'Lardy' Blush

Anonymousbird · 22/01/2011 18:12

TheMonster · 22/01/2011 18:12

Mutznutz, maybe he meant that and I misheard Grin

OP posts:
mutznutz · 22/01/2011 18:15

suddenly the term 'lady' doesn't sound so bad does it? Grin

GwendolineMaryLacey · 22/01/2011 18:37

So if you had been with a friend and he'd said 'hello ladies' would that have been rude, impolite and bad customer service?

Punkatheart · 22/01/2011 18:41

I like 'Rainbow' - unless he is looking for a pot of gold...

Wink
TheMonster · 22/01/2011 19:06

No, that's a good point, gwendoline. I'm still not convinced that I am being unreasonable though!

OP posts:
HelenBa · 22/01/2011 19:06

I think it's odd I've never heard that here, sounds like he was thinking of 'hello ladies' (creepy but does get used) and went for the singular?

like rainbow :)

GwendolineMaryLacey · 22/01/2011 19:15

Odd isn't it? :)
