decided to ttc

just phoned gp to try and get swine flu jab.

they won't give it to me until im pg

so i have to wait until theres a baby inside then have the jab.

don't really fancy being injected withthat once theres a baby inside

what do you think?

what should i do next?

should i try to go to the health authortity or whatever they are called, who do you go to if you don't agree with your gp?

YABU if we're talking about a free shot from NHS (you're not eligible)

Flu shot fine to have in pregnancy.

But you are not being unreasonable to go and pay for one on the high street.

Seasonal include Swine Flu BTW

saffy85 · 21/01/2011 17:28

Exactly LITR. I'd trust it to be given to my 3 year old DC so I was happy enough to be jabbed with it while PG. Too bad some thoughtless, selfish twonk promptly gave me swine flu a few days later so I never got to find out if it was effective! Grin

porcamiseria · 21/01/2011 17:34

married, can get them in boots for 18 x

GwendolineMaryLacey · 21/01/2011 17:35

Don't be silly :) Shame we don't share a doctor, I know of a vacc going spare Wink

justcarrots29 · 21/01/2011 17:37

Oh I didn't realise chemists could do them. Does anyone know roughly how much it costs? I have two young children and they didn't get the jab in my area.

MainlyMaynie · 21/01/2011 17:43

YABU. If you could get the flu jab for TTC, every paranoid woman of child-bearing age would claim to be TTC and take even more vaccine from the genuine risk groups. None of 'fancy' having a vaccine while pregnant, but that is the way the prioritisation works.

I also think that the places offering it privately should be forced to offer the vaccines to the NHS to enable all those in at risk groups to be protected. Do you really feel comfortable taking a vaccine away from someone genuinely in a risk group?

PassionKiss · 21/01/2011 17:44

justcarrots - I don't think chemists don't do under 16 year olds. But adults cost about 10-15 quid.

alicet · 21/01/2011 17:53

If you want it for your child you may be able to do what my friend did - her GP wrote a private prescription so she could go and pay for the vaccine and then they arranged for the practice nurse to give it

FanjolinaJolie · 21/01/2011 17:59

Almost everwhere is out of stock, that is both NHS and private.

Medicare at London Victoria and Fleet Street Clinic still have stocks (I believe)

sevendwarves · 21/01/2011 18:06

YABU, if they won't vaccinate all under 5's (who IMO are an at-risk group) they're hardly going to vaccinate juse because you say you're ttc are they?

What about women that aren't TTC but accidentally get pregnant? Should they vaccinate all females of child-producing age?

foundinhongkong · 21/01/2011 18:14

YABU

My DS is in a high risk group, all the GP surgeries in our area are now out of stock. We've both been on the waiting list for weeks (I'm pregnant and asthmatic), he's now he's contracted flu and is really suffering as a consequence. Healthy adults should source the vaccine themselves and pay for it, I don't believe however, chemists or Boots will give it to under 18's.

carriedababi · 21/01/2011 18:20

ww, that's just the set up we have in the country though isn't it.

you pay, you get
whever thats education of health or various other perks in life

i didn't invent the system

seven, as if i'd suggest everyone of child bearing age should have it, don;t exagerate

sevendwarves · 21/01/2011 18:37

I'm not exaggerating, I didn't quote that you'd said it. It was a genuine question.

If you think that women who are ttc should be entitled to it rather than it being given in pregnancy where does that leave those who accidentally become pregnant?

carriedababi · 21/01/2011 18:48

exposed to allsorts, but they should mainly be concerned if the pg is wanted or not and if they have enough folic acid

but if your not in that situation and are actively planning ttc, it makes sense to me, to have the jab before, so theres definatley no risks to the baby, plus if the jab makes yu ill, you can get over that easier

OP, I asked this question on the webchat with Prof Salisbury here a few weeks ago. He said it wasn't offered prior to pregnancy as it was safe to use in pregnancy, so there was no need.

Lots of hostility towards the OP, when she's just trying to be prepared for pregnancy, in the same way as women might take folic acid, give up smoking, have a smear test etc. It's not really her fault that stocks of the vaccine are becoming low.

I felt exactly the same. After a MMC last year I didn't want to risk anything unnecessarily during my next pregnancy, if and when it happened. So I got the flu jab. Before anyone flames me, I am eligible because I am asthmatic, but if I was not ttc I probably wouldn't have had the jab this year. I don't usually have it.

carriedababi · 21/01/2011 19:42

thankyou janice.

I can see where you're coming from but it just isn't possible to offer the vaccine to everyone (and any woman could say she's TTC in order to be vaccinated). Plus what makes this year any different to any other as it would need to be offered annually.

I wanted to be vaccinated against regular flu and swine flu because I work at a hospital (not frontline but I do have contact with quite a few ill people). DH is self-employed so he doesn't want to catch it either. He's also in an at risk group but our GP only has the swine flu vaccine not including the general influenza vaccination too. We paid £15 each to have the combine vaccine at a private GP.

tiredfeet · 21/01/2011 20:31

If I was ttc right now I would want to do the same, it would make a lot more sense. However, due to the shortage I can see why you are not a priority. Sounds like trying to get it privately would be a good option. I know we are reassured it won't do any harm in pregnancy but I think its pretty normal to still want to avoid having to have it then

TattyDevine · 21/01/2011 20:33

YABU for all the reasons mentioned yet I see, and agree, with your logic!

macdoodle · 21/01/2011 20:34

Yabu and barking Hmm

sleeplessinderbyshire · 21/01/2011 20:36

the seasonal flu jab protects against swine flu. The swine flu only jab is last year's jab and isn't recommended for use this year. It's not the G being sifficult it's them following the DoH guidelines and making sure they offer the jab to those in the risk groups not the worried well.

PS of course the jab is safe in pregnancy

PlanetLizard · 21/01/2011 20:40

YANBU, I agree with you OP.
