to think "The Little Princess" is a bad role model & can 'move on'

DD (3) has been given three "Little Princess" books (all by different people).

They all involve a spoilt brat screaming "I WANT, I WANT, I WANT" while all the adults run around her pandering. She usually gets what she wants.

Apparently this is a TV show too (thank goodness we've never seen it). But the books seem to be very popular.

I can't stand them & I hide them & now DD has access to them at nursery!!!

AIBU to HATE them & hide them from DD? (I don't want to donate to charity as that would involve inflicting them on another family?) To me they just seem to encourage selfishness & bad behaviour (ie screaming to get what you want), which I really don't want DD to take up/copy/be influenced by.

Surely I'm not alone? I'm really puzzled as to why people think stories like this are a good idea? Any parents out there who actually like them? (DD seems to like them Sad) Am I missing something?

YANBU. I think it's rubbish as well. My mumalso hates it!

potplant · 21/01/2011 16:19

Wait till you get to Horrid Henry. It's a naught childrens handbook

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 21/01/2011 16:31

I don't think the people who gave them actually read them before handing over money, but for me the name itself is so yukky I'd never be drawn to buy them.

Plus why does she wear that raggedy pillowcase all the time?

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 21/01/2011 16:33

I hate them too.
spoilt brat.

minipie · 21/01/2011 16:34

Thought at first you meant "A Little Princess" by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Which is a fab book.

But clearly not Grin

ilythia · 21/01/2011 16:37

Can you take all my peppa pig books as well?

mathanxiety · 21/01/2011 16:37

Maybe the people who gave the books made the same mistake?

And Horrid Henry is even better. So ner

mutznutz · 21/01/2011 16:47

I hate the whole 'little princess' pink obsession anyway

TheProvincialLady · 21/01/2011 16:48

YANBU. We were bought one called "I Want My Potty" which ends with the princess wetting herself and being embarrassed because no one got her potty to her in time. What a fecking stupid idea for a book. I threw it in the binm - couldn't even take it to the charity shop in case someone else bought it and traumatised inflicted it on their child. Badly written, unfunny and ugly to look at.

BlessedAssurance · 21/01/2011 16:52

YANBU.. i hate them and in our house they are not there,DH has said he will not buy DD that stuff and no one else should..spoilt brats the princess nonsense-

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 21/01/2011 16:52

i quite like them. its only a book. [shrugs]

BreconBeBuggered · 21/01/2011 16:57

Horrid Henry is a cheap Just-William wannabe and not worthy of the genre. DS2 currently loves the books and I let him take them out of the library with a sinking heart.
The Little Princess books aren't up to much, but I must confess to liking the TV series. I have a soft spot for the camp General.

NicknameTaken · 21/01/2011 16:57

I love the little princess! I think the potty one has hilarious picture and we used it a lot when toilet-training DD. "I want my dinner" is all about learning to say please and thank you.

DuplicitousBitch · 21/01/2011 16:59

horrid henry is a dick thought. luckily i have wean dd off them and onto mr gum

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 21/01/2011 17:00

Findingstufftochuckout -they are FAB because they reflect what children are like in the real world, not in some fluffy darling-little-angel-goody-goody-twoshoes la-la land.

And at around age 2-3, it is all "I want I want I want" - now that does not mean they should get what they want of course. Reinforcing that life is not about "I want I want I want"

But they get into a child's inner psyche, that's why they relate to Horrid Henry who is a human being rather than his priggish little goody-goody tell-tale-tit little brother Perfect Peter.

I don't think the Princess or HH usually win, btw. Just sometimes they manage to grind their parents down though Grin

Voodoobollox · 21/01/2011 17:00

Yabu. She is feisty, fun and generally fab.

Not everything can be completely PC and precious! Plus kids adore watching other children being naughty. My DD loved Little Princess and now is passionate about Horrid Henry but is beautifully behaved herself. It's escapism and entertainment FFS

Whelk · 21/01/2011 17:01

dd loves it. Surely thats the point?
They are allowed some non-sensible fun you know!!

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 21/01/2011 17:04

Sadly my dc's are now teens, or else I'd suggest sending your reject books to me Grin

Nicknametaken - yes we used the potty one during potty training too! The one about the Little Princess wanting a little sister (and getting a little brother) was brilliant as dd got that one when we were expecting her brother and was constantly saying 'but I want a little sister!' Smile

Angelmist · 21/01/2011 17:09

Return the book to sender with " not suitable for small children."

I wholeheartedly agree this could be tongue in cheek, fun poking book for an adult but not for a little child.

Adults give children inappropriate stuff without thinking. Its up to thinking parents to screen gifts and accept or not accept on behalf of their children.
