My sister was not impressed when she moved to London!!

bellastella · 21/01/2011 11:48

Ok if you're not entitled to a medical card, how about a GP visit card? The income threshold is a little higher..

drivingmisscrazy · 21/01/2011 11:48

income tax is not a lot lower than in the UK! but the fact of the matter is that you've a much smaller tax base, a lot of elderly people, a lot of under 18s and a totally corrupt system (2 tier, those with health insurance and those without - consultants and hospitals regularly charge the insurers for things that aren't necessary or even done. The insurers don't negotiate prices direct with the providers....)

I am lucky to have a very good GP here, but even though I pay at least 40% of salary in taxes and deductions of various kinds, I can't think of a single thing I've got in return!

scuzy · 21/01/2011 11:48

but it should be the case for everyone ... basic health care for kids whatever about adults should be free!!!

Oh I didn't realise we are going to have free prescriptions in scotland. We get a better deal up here! We don't pay for water either. Confused

scuzy · 21/01/2011 11:49

bella am waiting to hear about that one .... am doubtful tho.

drivingmisscrazy · 21/01/2011 11:49

oh and you do have a health visitor/clinic but if there is any health issue at all they will just tell you to see your GP

curlymama · 21/01/2011 11:50

Pharmacists are good with advice sometimes. It might be an idea to go into your local Chemist to see if they thing your ds needs to see the GP. There might be times that they are able to tell you that you don't need to worry.

Someone has to pay. You have to decide how to pay. As Drivingmisscrazy said, you have a much smaller tax base. Our system wouldn't work for you.

scuzy · 21/01/2011 11:53

another thing that bugs the hell outa me and anyone living in ireland will agree .... there is NOTHING there to help self employed people. the employ people pay taxes reduce the live register but when things go belly up your on yer own.

OP posts:
mutznutz · 21/01/2011 11:53

Ahh thanks midnight I thought I'd read they were free. Still it beats the hell out of England where prescriptions are £7.20 Hmm

scuzy · 21/01/2011 11:54

why wudnt it work for us?

OP posts:
scuzy · 21/01/2011 11:55

mutz i spend 120 a month on prescriptions it would be more only thats the most you can spend thank god though it is increasing to 150 amonth

pascoe28 · 21/01/2011 11:55

I think it's ridiculous to have free anything - we should all pay our own way, except for those out of work.

No wonder my taxes are so frigging high.

midnightexpress · 21/01/2011 11:56

I think because you don't have so many people paying tax (whichg is what funds the NHS in the UK), and you have a lot of older and younger people (who tend to use the health service more than the people in the middle) so it wouldn't be possible to pay for all the services required out of taxation.

scuzy · 21/01/2011 11:57

well may you always be able to pay your own pascoe! good for you! Hmm

OP posts:
midnightexpress · 21/01/2011 11:57

Off you pop to America then Pascoe...

scuzy · 21/01/2011 11:58

was thinking that midnight but surely it can come from somewhere.its ironic that in our country you are better off financially on the dole than working. no incentive to work

PURPLESWAN · 21/01/2011 11:59

So Scotland/Ireland/England & Wales are all UK and paid for by the SAME taxpayers but get varying amounts of "free" healthcare....its bloody ridiculous isnt it?

lol Ireland isnt UK. NORTHERN ireland is.

OP posts:
midnightexpress · 21/01/2011 12:02

And healthcare is a devolved issue in Scotland and Wales.

PURPLESWAN · 21/01/2011 12:02

It pisses me off massively that the Scottish/Welsh get more for their/our tax money than we do in the UK but now pisses me off equally that the Irish are getting LESS - it should be a UK policy over the WHOLE of the UK.

mayorquimby · 21/01/2011 12:03

In farness it's not like we have any cash at the moment to start adding services.
It's a pain but I don't see how we could add such a service.
