Just because I didn't want to talk to him. I'm appalled - he didn't know what my personal situation was. He called me up and I politely said I didn't want to talk to him. Him: "that's not very polite of you. Why not?"
Grrrr

We're with the TPS and don't get anything like the calls we used to get prior to this.
We still get the odd one though, and I have been known that when they ask to speak to my DH and I say he's not in, they then ask what time he'll be back and I put on an upset voice saying 'He'll never be coming back'. At this point they don't know whether he's possibly even dead and they soon disappear and don't bother calling back!

My favourite is to ask them to hold on and then walk away, the longest someone stayed on the line for was 37 minutes!

If I'm on my own I just tend to hang up without talking at all. (Or shout FUCK OFF then hang up if stressed)

If I have an audience however it's a different matter.
I like to play! I had one going for a good 20 minutes on Monday. Grin

It's just a tactic to make you feel guilty and stay on the line.

We had one of those "this is not a sales call, how old is your kitchen?" calls the other day. I told him I wasn't interested in a new kitchen, he repeated that it wasn't a sales call. I asked why was he interested in the age of my kitchen if he didn't want to sell me one? He hung up

Well, I was certainly less polite that I usually am, this afternoon.

I arrived home and the phone was ringing. 1st cold caller. There then followed 4 more within 10 minutes!

The 4th person, from Anglian Windows, got a blooming mouthful, I can tell you!

I'm afraid I've just roared "fuck off" down the phone - at the 7 th call in an hour! They're international calls so not covered by TPS, and it's been going on all week. They have my name and want me to confirm my address, which is actually our old one, then want me to do a survey. I just cracked Blush

Re the computer scam - you can try chatting away to them for ages and then in an aside which you "accidentally" let them hear ask "How is that trace going?" They hang up pretty quickly if you do that apparently!

I left bloody Orange broadband a while back because speeds were worse than dialup (that's what you get for a free service Grin), and lately they've rung several times saying "we're your provider, can I please speak to MR my-XH's-name" (who was never on the contract, and my first name is hardly gender neutral!) I think it may be a scam. But either way I've been pretty abrupt.

MaureenMLove - this is what I usually do with Anglian:

Say yes I'm v interested in new windows, can you send a salesman round asap. When salesman calls round, say v sorry, their mistake, the appt was for TOMORROW. Then re-arrange appointment for when you're out. They usually get the message Grin

They waste my time, I'll waste theirs.

When I get a kitchen, conservatory, windows, etc one, I just usually say, " I'll have to ask my landlord".

Before I finish the word landlord, I am listening to the dialling tone...as they've hung up on me!!

We're on TPS too, but no difference as far as I can tell-esp with those recorded message calls.

dacncergirl - thats actually a shitty thing to do. As irritating as those salespeople are, they are, after all only trying to make a living, in what are very difficult times. Hmm

I actually felt bad because i was very rude and abrupt with an anglican window saleman tonight, however i useually just say no no no NO and shut the door, the poor guy looked frozen.

LOL at these.

I keep getting calls for a Mr Dean Martin and I am running out of Rat Pack jokes, not that any of the young whipper-snappers know who he was.

My exh was unexpectedly made redundant 3 weeks before the birth of dc3. Obviously some insurance bods had scoured the local paper birth announcements and rang to see if we wanted some sort of (he can't remember what) insurance. My then (d)h explained that he was unemployed at the moment and looking for work to which the the insurance bloke sneered "yeah well! you should have thought about that before you had a 3rd dc!" and put the phone down.

Don't know why ex didn't just say that we were insured for bladdy everything? Oh well.

Anyway YANBU.

I agree Dancergirl - these people are just doing their jobs.

I am amazed so many of you have landlines actually. I only have a mobile and have never received a cold call.

I tell window/guttering.driveway etc sales people that the house is rented (it's not), they soon lose interest.

Broadband/Sky/Phone/Utilities sale people get told that DH has a regularly updated spreadsheet of all our bills and regularly checks online to check we're on the right tariff. This unfortuneately is true Blush

I was called recently by my old energy supplier and the caller became very rude and aggressive and called me a liar when I said we had compared prices and switched to a cheaper company.

It went down hill further when I pointed out that he had contacted me and not the other way round.

A few years ago I got hassled by a mobile phone company, trying to get me to upgrade my phone. Of course they wouldnt listen when I said no. So I had to be a b**h. I got the guy to tell me all about this new phone and the new tariff, asked LOADS of questions, then asked him to hold on as there was another call waiting. 5 mins later we are back talking. And I asked him more questions. Back on hold for 2 mins, back to talking.

It then got a bit silly, asked him if the new phone has a calculator, if it had this and that and then told him I wasnt interested. I managed to engage him for about 40 mins, needless to say he was quite pissed off, asked me why I didnt tell him earlier. Well, I dont like being mean to people but if you don't get the message. Funny, they never ever called again.
