Possibly worst film I've ever seen? Stuck on sofa as not well and thought I'd treat myself to bit of light relief but it is painfully bad. Now recalling the first film was crap too How can Such a successful series spawn such shite movies?

OP, thanks for this thread, I saw this film for the first time two weeks' ago and wanted to post something then. I really loved the series, but SATC2 is complete cak. JamieLeeCurtis sums it all up nicely, as does the wonderful Mr KERMODE.

Apart from the films having lost touch completely with the aim of the series to portray "real women", as Kermode highlights, it skirts over the issue of the conditions women and migrant workers really live in in the Emirate states, and pretty much uses this for amusement purposes. Did anyone see the BBC news bulletin last night about enforced/slave labour in Dubai? Dubai is pretty much bankrupt and propped up by Abu Dhabi. I doubt the regime in AD operates any differently.

mayorquimby. I love how he does that all off the cuff. Simon looks a bit bored, though ...

reluctanthomosapien · 21/01/2011 15:56

There are some interesting issues; menopause, the realities and disappointments of motherhood (even to those who have longed for children), the fact that men still dominate the workplace/glass ceilings, and the holy grail of marriage and whether it really is all that. All issues that would have been great tackled on mainstream tv, for women like me who are knocking on a bit and don't relate to much of what's on these days (most entertainment shows aimed at sub 25 year olds). If they wanted to stay true to the show, they should have done a mini series and properly dealt with all of that stuff. Instead they served up a big steaming pile of camel shite.

reluctant - thanks for the link. Will have a look

true about those issues. Have never heard Menopause mentioned on the TV or cinema. And I know Mark Kemrode ranted about it, but Charlotte's meltdown about the children did touch me

neepsntatties · 21/01/2011 16:06

The first film offended me. Load of sexist shit. Even dh was shocked by it. I won't be putting myself through the second one.

DastardlyandSmugly · 21/01/2011 16:12

Loved the series, hated the first film (all the puns drove me insane especially f'ing Louise from St Louis). I really feel like I should watch the second film but I can't bring myself to.

reluctanthomosapien · 21/01/2011 16:13

Ha, yes, my DH did have to sit through Charlotte's "confession" that motherhood aint all that, mere hours after my own tearful breakdown about not being able to cope with my toddler and baby, with no help whatsoever and a DH who works long hours. For that alone, I should thank SATC2. Pity my life isn't so simple as being able to take off to my mate's lovely apartment whenever the kids are driving me crazy!

reluctanthomosapien · 21/01/2011 16:35

Sorry to be a ranty pants, but this thread has made this horrible film is flash before my eyes.

Re the Irish nanny. For a start, what bearing has her being Irish got to do with anything? I noticed this a bit with SATC, they use nationalities in a pseudo pejorative manner. EG, Sam couldn't possibly go home with a PAKISTANI bus boy.

So the Irish nanny is blonde, large breasted and vivacious. So of course, she wants to sleep with her boss and Harry, her boss, is gagging to do it with her. But wait, they won't, because she is a LESBIAN. Not a professional young woman just doing her job. Not because Harry's a loyal and loving husband. No, that ineviatable liaison is thwarted by the nanny's sexuality. A story line lifted from Friends, when that turned to inutterable shite.

I HATE THIS MOVIE.

KarenTroon · 21/01/2011 20:10

I must be the only person that really enjoyed it (maybe I need to get out more) I just thot it was a bit of light relief and was the BEST bit Liza Minelli stealing the show with just one song.Big stealing the show Half naked (How Fitttttttttttttttttttt is he?) Even if you hate the film he is easy on the EYE.THE BEST BIT for me (remember I am the one that doesn't get out much) THE BEST Bit IS when Charlotte and Miranda can't F**G Believe how some mothers can manage motherhood withot FULL TIME help and they raise their glasses and drink to US YES Girls US the supermums out her who do it without FULL TIME help (Well I thot it was great just for that alone) Sorry to upset anybody but maybe I will get out a bit more this year.Lots of love to all us supermums.Karen x

Fontsnob · 21/01/2011 20:16

Oh god it was so awful! And Liza Minelli made me stare, slack jawed, in embarrassed awe. Shudder.

NorthernGobshite · 21/01/2011 20:27

Pretty clothes - tick

PussinJimmyChoos · 21/01/2011 20:33

It was shite and I hated the sterotyping of women in the Middle East - really pissed me off

They all looked so ill as well as if losing weight is the key to staying looking youthful!!

ThierryHenryismyBoyfriend · 21/01/2011 20:37

The films are just as bad as the tv series!.

I was unlucky enough to go to cinema to see the second film and after an hour I wanted to poke my eyes out.

2 hours of my life lost......

MilkNoSugarPlease · 21/01/2011 20:46

It was utter shit...I loved it :o

pepperonipizza · 21/01/2011 20:46

If you didn't like the TV series why would you go see the film???!!!!

Ok - I admit SATC2 isn't going to win any oscars, but if you love the series, have got to know the characters and care about how their lives turn out, then this is just a bit of fun. An escape from miserableness, recession, etc. If you will. It's not trying to pretend it's anything other!

If you like it, great. If you don't, just turn it off and stop moaning! I love SATC, and even this (admittedly slightly substandard) film won't put me off.

BootyMum · 21/01/2011 21:01

I am so ambivalent about the SATC movies.

On one hand I agree with every word of Mark Kermode's review. I was also gobsmacked at the crassness, the stereotypes, the patronising of the "foreigners", the overwhelming product placement and consumerism...

However on the other hand I saw this in the cinema with a girlfriend and we enjoyed our time away from our young babies and just revelled in the silliness of it all.

I must admit however to raising an eyebrow at Charlotte's comment that she doesn't know how women who have no help manage - thought this could irritate all us plebs who do exactly this every day... Hmm

maighdlin · 21/01/2011 21:14

i absolutely loved loved loved satc. i loved the first film, the second, wtf?? it was slapstick and stupid and i think patricia field had a mild stroke, the outfit carrie wore to the souk made me want to cry. the characters weren't even likeable any more, it was like they got a generic crappy chick flick film script and put warped versions of the characters in them not the C&C&S&M we know and love. the original series was fantastic, drama smart comedy real issues (and consequences you cheat on you husband you get a ring wtf???) i did enjoy the first time but the second time i just noticed how bad it was. it was an insult to the series.

A1980 · 21/01/2011 23:22

I have never watched SATC a and I'm sure the film is shite.

But I really want to see it. Only because I was there in Sidi Kaouki in Morocco at the exact time they were filming the beach scenes.I got to see them setting up and everything.
