To buy pink things for DS2?

DS2's favourite colour is pink - it's the first colour that he recognised and now at the age of 2yrs 3mos, he loves to have pink things.

So recently I've bought him a pink tractor (v.hard to find), pink cutlery, pink crockery and a pink sponge. DH is finding this really irritating and thinks that I'm going to confuse him into thinking he's a girl, because pink is a girl's colour. And make him (DS2) look silly.

I think pink's just a colour, and if DS2 likes it, and wants pink things, then I should just let him have fun with them. I wouldn't buy him pink clothes as they are so obviously girly, but if I could find a boy's stripey jumper with a pink stripe or two I wouldn't have a problem with it. And it stops arguments with DS1, who strongly believes that pink is for girls, and only wants blue things.

AIBU?

My DS2 is 3 and his favourite colour is pink. Doesnt worry me at all, though I havent bought him anything pink, prob as its hard to find pink things for boys.
Perhaps I will look after reading this!

Ds1 loves pink and always chooses pink things.

I drew the line at the pink and silver glitter disney princess slippers. I wouldn't buy them for a dd if I had one, so I refused to buy them for him.

There was a time when baby boys were dressed in Pink and only girls wore Blue. Red was thought to be a strong, masculine colour and Pink was just a watered down version of that. Blue was much softer and therefore for girls.

Not that it matters, as you say, it's just a colour.

Stick him in tights too. They're great for keeping cold draughts out under trousers :)

Blatherskite, have had them both in long johns this winter during the snow, and was only sorry it didn't occur to me to buy DS2 pink ones (and tell DH that M&S had run out of manly black or white ones in his size)!

Vajazzler, a tough enough to wear pink t-shirt is something that even DH couldn't argue with. I wish I had one for DS2 - he'd be so chuffed.

I do worry a bit about how the liking for pink will play out if DS2 still loves the colour when he goes to school, but if he does I'll definitely follow your very wise advice, skydance. Plus, DS2 is quite a toughie and already more likely to stand up for himself than DS1 (result of him having to fight for everything), so I think that anyone who did tease him for liking pink would probably soon realise that was the only girly thing about him.

And wingdad - no offence intended! I meant that only real men (i.e. strong enough to carry off wearing a feminine colour, and put up with ridiculous misconceptions about it) can wear pink. Which I imagine, means you!

Me and my son have matching pink dressing gowns because he insisted on having one!! We lounge around the house in them!!

NonnoMum · 19/01/2011 21:06

My DD (2.5) loves blue and, believe it or not, only wants blue-things to wear, or "Thomas" clothes.
Funnily enough it's really hard to get her stuff that is not pink, especially clothes.
i.e have you ever seen a dress with Thomas the Tank on?

YANBU at all.

Pink is a lovley colour that anyone can appreciate!

DS2 is 2.8 and loves his pink slippers that Father Christmas brought him!

WestYorkshirePudding · 19/01/2011 21:08

Yep, DS2 loved pink up to a few months ago (thankfully Father Christmas didn't go overboard on the pink presents) and loved nothing more than taking his teddy in his pink buggy out to do the school run.

He has long hair which he loves and asks me to put it in bunches for him (he has an array of clips that would rival Claire's Accessories) I do say this game is just for when we're in the house but he did once insist on wearing his new sparkly pink headband round the shops...

Who cares what people think? And unfortunately they do think :(

Jellykat · 19/01/2011 21:09

Both my DSs wear pink (aged 22 and 13)
Pink boxer shorts, pink socks with banana patterns, shirts, Tees.. There's a lot around.

Why not take your DH to Next Menswear or the like, to show him how many 'men' are buying and wearing it!.. Smile

BinkyNic · 19/01/2011 21:11

My DD is exactly the same as NonnoMum's. She likes blue, and she has Geaorge Pig. Pink is just a colour...

TotemPole · 19/01/2011 22:05

It won't make him think he's a girl.

But it might make him gay.Grin
