Lollipop people

Am I being unreasonable to think that my children should have a lollipop person to help them cross the road?

YANBU, I'm sad that ours went last year, but you could always help them yourself.

5Foot5 · 19/01/2011 18:39

Is it a busy road? How do they get across it at the moment? Are there enough children needing to cross to make it a sensible proposition?

Is it a case that you would let them take themselves to school if you knew someone was helping them cross the road near the school?

We clearly need more info Smile

bubblewrapped · 19/01/2011 19:15

If they are under 8, and its outside school, then no, YANBU

However if they are 18, and on the way to the pub.. then YABU.

And anywhere in between, they should really know how to safely cross a road at a crossing by themselves.

JamieLeeCurtis · 19/01/2011 19:20

My dad once told me to watch out crossing the main road - I was 21 and just left University Grin

But YANBU - we got one for our DCs school last year and it has made all the difference. Bless you, Agnes!

I live in Suffolk and the Council are threatening to axe all the lollipop people. Schools may be able to employ crossing guards directly, but they won't have the same legal power to stop traffic that lollipop people do.

stoatsrevenge · 19/01/2011 19:55

OUr council are also axing lollipop people. Schools will have to employ them if they need them - we're wondering who will do the training. All for a paltry £120K.
Our school is situated on a busy road and parents would go mental if the lollipop person disappeared. So we will be obliged to employ one.

Bloody stupod cuts. (And get this - they're cutting disabled shopping assistance - £50K per year! I can't belive it, particuarly as they have a particularly ridiculous multi-million ££££ project ongoing at the same time.)Sad and Angry

BTW I didn't leave any letters out of 'cuts' and I rather like the word 'stupod'.

I am assuming outside a school (or nearby) and primary age?

The school I work at has no crossing patrol anymore despite very busy roads surrounding it. The old one lef a year ago. Despite advertising no one has offered to the job. Seems noone wants to be a crossing patrol round here.
