She is fab and talks so much sense. So glad he has done this show as bad customer service drives me insane - I hate it. Sack the lot of them

NanaNina · 19/01/2011 22:12

Think I must be the only person who doesn't think Mary Portas is so FAB. Did any of you fans read the interview that Decca Aitkenhead did with Mary Portas and reported in the Guardian recently. Apparently all MPs employees seemed afraid of her and she was extremely demanding and bossy with them. One poor employee bought the wrong coffee and was summarily despatched by MP to go back and get the right one.

Decca is an excellent journalist and is usually very fair but she found Mary Portas to be very demanding and controlling and she was apparently quite shocked that she came across like that.

As for the orange hair, if she is so cool,I wonder why she didn't get her dark roots done before doing the programme.

Did any of you see her a year or so ago when she barged into charity shops and made these volunteers feel that what they were doing was all wrong and they were unsurprisingly upset.

Having said all that i did watch her tonight but don't think I'll bother again.

NanaNina · 19/01/2011 22:14

I think some of you who are complaining about bad service stop to think that these shop assistants are most probably paid the minimum wage............wonder how Mary Portas would manage to smile, speak and serve on that kind of money!

Huffymuffy · 19/01/2011 23:06

You know I feel her basic message is totally right though. First rule of customer service: be friendly. Second rule: encourage them to come back. We recently had tea at Pizza Hut. Bit down market, treat for the kids. The waitress was amazing. She made the dinner feel like fun, the kids felt special, she couldn't have been better. Roxanne from Chippenham if you read this...I still remember your name, and yes I filled out the online survey and gave you a tip. See...min wage job, but what a different experience to the minimal attention we'd had weeks before.
Why did we go back? Because they gave us an envelop thing to get us to go back. But now after that service I would go lots more. Makes a huge difference. And costs nothing!

kittya · 19/01/2011 23:18

I love Mary and her amazing rings. Her brother is a hairdresser, maybe he does her hair?

NewImprovedJollster · 19/01/2011 23:27

huffy you are spot ON. I spent 20 years in retail before being a SAHM, and did it all from min wage shop floor to board room.

We all make the choice whatever job we do... am not defending underpaid jobs (but sadly you need to look at the real villains of this situation, the retail landlords charging exorbitant occupancy costs) but am reminded of the theory that no one is born happy, we all wake up and choose to address each day in a certain way.

The same principle is true in retail/service jobs, but much needs to come from the cultural leadership of each business. There are great examples out there (IMO e.g. Pret) but too many rest on their laurels - and MP is great for shooting them off their comfy perch.

"I think some of you who are complaining about bad service stop to think that these shop assistants are most probably paid the minimum wage............wonder how Mary Portas would manage to smile, speak and serve on that kind of money!"

low wage is no excuse for bad service.bad training and low morale is a reason for bad service but wages are not. you are paid to do teh job and you do it. if you are in a customer facing role you need to be polite and approachable. the girls that were filmed undercover were neither, they were cursing, ignoring customers, not forthcoming with offers of help even when asked by mary. a salary rise would not have altered this. a kick up the bum, in the customer service side of things is what will improve it but it has to come from management.

Huffymuffy · 19/01/2011 23:38

NewImprovedJollister I assess nvq/apprenticeship candidates in customer service. I preach the sky is the limit and being nice costs nothing. Your story totally illustrates the reality. MP is just making people realise they should do their best whatever job you have, you have no idea what gets you noticed.

ButterflySally · 19/01/2011 23:42

I agree completely with huffy. Regardless of how much they are paid, they are indeed paid that wage to serve customers. It's surely the basic premise of the job.

Having worked in retail, I know what it's like.

It is so much nicer when you have great service - makes you leave the shop feeling positive. There's nothing worse than leaving a shop feeling grumpy and irritated because the shop assistant didn't give you the time of day.

I applaud Mary for taking this on and hope she makes a difference to service within British retailing.

I was, for a long time, one of those shop assistants. I also had severe depression. I still knew that I was paid (albeit very little) to smile, speak and serve. That was my job. So I did it.

I also knew it made my job easier.

You smile at someone, they smile back, the whole interaction is much more pleasant. You end up dealing with less arsey customers per day, therefore the job isn't quite as crap as it could be.

As for the charity shop, I think most of the volunteers forgot that they were there first and foremost to make money for a charity by selling things. I think she did really well there, and they were infuriating. Reminds me of one of my old local charity shops, so totally unable to adapt that one member of staff refused to sell me one part of a set (trousers and blazer) even though they were actually vastly different sizes. It was too much effort to just separate and re-price them.

MIL works in a charity shop and said she wishes someone like MP would come in and help make the place run better, as she has to work with nutters like those all the time who just refuse to change anything, even if it would;
a - make the charity more money
b - make their job easier

begonyabampot · 20/01/2011 01:35

she annoyed me tonight and i didn't always agree with her thought thought that the changes she wanted would benefit the shop staff in pilot more than anyone and give them a sense of doing something with pride and fun. Was in Monsoon in Bristol last week and there was an older lady manning the changing rooms. She was bloody amazing - her energy, humour, professionalism and enthusiasm made such a difference and made you realise that even in a job that sounds low key - attitude can make a huge difference. Hope she's appreciated - I'm sure she is worth much more then she was being paid.

Ladyofthehousespeaking · 20/01/2011 01:40

I was a bit disappointed by tonights show, I'm not sure I'll make it through the series if I'm honest- I think retail staff are often very poorly treated by management and that bothers me more than being chased around a shop by people smiling at me

begonyabampot · 20/01/2011 01:43

TBH - I often hate that forced smile/greeting - hate to be followed round the shop when I'm happy browsing then have to explain sheepishly ' that I'm only browsing'. has to be a middle ground for good customer service - some of the things/ customers I've heard the staff discussing openly would make your toes curl!

PineCones · 20/01/2011 02:22
