have read in this week's grazia that spanx have bought out maternity versions, to minimise baby bumps.

first and foremost, surely squishing your bump into Spanx can not be good for the baby? secondly, they must be VERY uncomfortable, and thirdly, why on earth would us women want to "minimise" our pregancy bumps?

i just find it a bit sad tbh. :(

yanbu. Ridiculous indeed.

But then I have read about the growth in eating disorders amongst pregnant women (commonly referred to as "preorexia" - what a horrible term), the increase in dieting in pregnancy (beyond the desire to eat as healthily as possible)and the crazy things people do to shift any extra weight after the birth. So I am not that shocked that there is a market for such a stupid product.

AllNightMilkBar · 19/01/2011 16:42

I think the idea is to support the bump not squish it, and to 'shape' the thighs/hips etc.

:(

At 7 months pregnant I have just bought some of these. I don't want my bump minimised, I want to celebrate it and show it off in close fitting wrap dresses and tops.

I DO want to minimise the flab on my thighs and bottom, and these allow me to wear clothes which flatter my bump, and give a smooth line at the back rather than draw attention to my wobbly bits.

They provide gentle under bump and back support, which for me, in my 4th pregnancy is very important.

They don't squish your bump, in fact they do the opposite, they show it off. The fabric over the bump part is very different to the rest of the garment and is very sheer and expands with your bump.

They're very comfortable actually.

Think you might have got the wrong end of the stick.

piprabbit · 19/01/2011 16:58

link here, but they do seem to be talking about bum and thighs rather than bump squishing.

TattyDevine · 19/01/2011 16:59

Hold on a minute here! Can you back up that Spanx as a brand have released this product for the purpose of minimising baby bumps? Can you link to some marketing material that confirms this please?

If not, be a bit careful - I have a pair of these from when I was pregnant and they were a lovely supportive garment that provided support to the bump and supported the legs. It did not squish in any way, just supported the bump and gave it a wonderful shape. It felt like a nice "hug" not a squish.

Spanx would be pretty annoyed to hear you putting words in their mouth if you have misconstrued what this product is for, which I suspect you have.

TattyDevine · 19/01/2011 17:01

And these have been around for years, I had them when I was pregnant with my preschooler.

HettyAmaretti · 19/01/2011 17:04

Mmmm. I've seen photos of these before and it never occurred to me they were to minimise bump. TBH I don't think they are. I imagine the over the bump part is very soft and stretchy.

I'd have loved a pair when I was pregnant, a bit of extra support was just what I needed!

ButterflySally · 19/01/2011 17:04

You can't believe everything you read, but I read somewhere that Amanda Holden hid her bump through using spanx. I remember thinking at the time that it can't be good for the baby nor her insides (if the baby is squashed in, goodness knows what has to move to make room for it!)

I think they'd be quite good if, like hallamoo suggests, they only tone other parts of the body (thighs, bum etc).

StormInaCCup · 19/01/2011 17:04

I could do with some of these, currently 20 weeks pg and getting a nice little bump which I am enjoying, but don't like my cottage cheese thighs - and my bum seems to have also grown dramatically and could do with some 'herding in'. These sound just the ticket.

superv1xen · 19/01/2011 17:07

maybe i got the wrong end of the stick then! :o the way the Grazia writer described them was to minimise the baby bump though!

Re potential bump squashing with actual spanx as opposed to these. Women used to wear corsets at least in early pregnancy, if not throughout. The human race would have died out in the west if it was damaging to the baby.

It's not something I'd do, or condone, but I doubt it'd be that harmful. I imagine it'd get too uncomfortable before any harm could be done.

TattyDevine · 19/01/2011 17:17

To be fair I think the baby is cushioned enough in amniotic fluid etc that you'd probably have to do more than squish it to do any major damage (not that Spanx squish, I know because I've used them).

If you had low fluid or were leaking fluid or something you probably wouldn't want to squish anything, but once again, these dont squish.

Gawd there is no damn room in there at the end, god knows how anyone could wear a flaming corset. I remember sitting up in bed watching TV about 3 nights before I had my DD. I was watching something on pregnancy (looking for something to make me shout at the TV probably!) and they had a picture of the baby inside the tummy and which organs got displaced and where to. The drawing on the TV was sitting in exactly the same position as me, and I was sitting opposite the TV and as I stared up at it, it was like looking in a mirror and I smiled and smiled because finally, someone had acknowledged how bloody stupid the whole thing is!!!

KaraStarbuckThrace · 19/01/2011 17:21

Pip your link didn't work, found this one www.mytights.com/gb/specialist/maternity/spanx-power-mama.html

I think these are for supporting the bump and minimising the flab - sounds like something I need!

Wouldn't recommend using normal spanx during pregnancy I would imagine that they would be very uncomfortable.

manicbmc · 19/01/2011 17:23

Will it work on a wine gut? Grin

scotsgirl23 · 19/01/2011 17:36

I had the maternity spanx and they didn't minimise my bump. They lifted/supported it a bit, but mainly they dealt with the still flabby other areas (hips/thighs/bum) which sadly didn't miraculously become smooth just because I was pregnant!

I have seen a few articles about them recently and I think they are being quite badly misrepresented.

marriednotdead · 19/01/2011 17:40

Amanda Holden did say she'd been hiding her pregnancy with Spanx, BUT also added that she had checked with her doctor that she would do no harm to her unborn child in the process.
