not to change GP

Sorry this is v long! I've posted on other topics but have edited this to get more opinions. It's probably more of a WWYD than an AIBU..

DS1 is in Reception and I had a meeting last week with the SENCO to discuss his progress. Prior to starting school he had speech therapy sessions that he was referred to by our GP & a paediatrician from the local hospital. The paediatrician, school and I are in agreement that he needs more speech therapy & also that he will benefit from being assessed by an educational psychologist as he may have other behavioural issues.

We live in the London area on the borders of two boroughs. The school is in one borough (where we live) and our GP surgery is based in the neighbouring borough (it is the same distance away as the school in the opposite direction) and it's postal address is our borough. The SENCO has told me that because our GP is based in a different borough the speech therapist attached to the school will not assess DS1. The NHS trust for both boroughs is the same but apparently the boroughs' PCTs act independently.

The SENCO says that the two departments will not communicate when it comes to speech therapy and that she can make a referral to the school's borough but it will be ignored. She has been told that she can make a referral to the other borough but she is not familiar with their procedures so is unsure how it would work.

I just don't know what to do! The SENCO has told me that DS1 is struggling with his current program and that they need an updated one and further guidance but has no other suggestion than for us to change GP. I know this is the simple answer but I am loathe to do this as he is the doctor for the whole family and in the area we live in reliable/helpful doctors are difficult to find and any new GP would not accept DS1 on his own and would insist that we all join the surgery. AIBU? I feel like I am as the SENCO keeps telling me how easy it would be to get him seen if we change GPs!

She's talking rubbish the cheek of it suggesting you change GP (which resumably you are happy with for her onvenience) after all what is the referral filling in a form or making a phone call.

I'm slightly confused however it sounds like your GP is physically inone borough with an address in your borough, anyway someone needs to make a referral to the right speach therapist (it sounds like it is the one in the GPs borough yes) unless there are funny rules anyone cal make the referral she just has to pull her thumb out and do what she is payed to do

Just tell her you have well founded personal reasons to need to stay with your GP that don't concern your son and will not be changing and ask her to make the referral put it in writing if you ind it easier not to speak to her Grin

I agree with not1not2 She just needs to make the referral, where to is none of her concern unless it's a completely outlandish request. If she won't assist speak to the Head

Could you ask your GP to refer you back to the original SALT? Then when you saw them you could explain the situation and the local one will either keep seeing your DS, or arrange for the one attached to the school to see them.
